My PC is fully updated including Flash Player, QuickTime and drivers. I really don't have any "unusual" software installed.
Corel support got a complete analysis of my PC and based their (so far not-helping) suggestions on it.

I fully understand that it is probably has something to do with other software installed (since I've already re-installed and reset VS), but I'm not the only one that this is happening to. Pete Waterman reported the same, Ken reported that there is a 5-8 seconds delay in response (and I reported it myself testing on another machine).

The issue is that this behavior (the delay that may or may not end with non-responsiveness) wasn't there before. I'm not a frequent user of VS, but I used the album effect and VitaScene dozens of times with the same machine and never encountered this behavior.

Update:
Still no luck with Corel Support's advises.... updated my display drivers (again), uninstalled a few more software, but nothing.
So I decided to start over:
Uninstalled VS and every piece of software that is connected to it (plugins, etc.) - used special uninstall tools to clean registry entries as well.
Installed VS only, no plugins, no service packs: the album effect works! wheeeeee!

Seems like I rejoiced too early. I installed the Ultimate pack, including the ProDAD VitaScene transitions effect. VS froze when the effects library was rebuilt.

Resetting VS and installing SP1 and SP2 didn't help. VS kept freezing while rebuilding the effects library. :x

When I removed the VitaScene files from the vfx-plug folder, VS managed to rebuild the effect library and the album effect does work, no delays or hangs or anything like it.
Installing additional plugins (Burger, etc.) didn't cause any harm. VS is working. Album effect is working. VitaScene can't be installed.

I'm still waiting for Corel Support to get back to me, but I not keeping my hopes high.

Hi Doron

Sorry we have been unable to help, VitaScene seems to work ok on my pc, I don’t have a problem using with Video Studio.

At least you seem to have found the culprit, hopefully Corel support will get back with a solution.

I just wonder what the difference is with your set-up.
I will e-mail a copy of vitascen.vfx , just in case you have a bad file.
I am assuming simply adding it to the Vft_plug folder will make it work?

Hi Trevor,
Thanks, but it didn't work. Your file caused VS to hang as well.
