First, where possible I always use my Sanyo HD1010 for both video and still images, this way the numbering sequence is always in order, my method of identifying images/clips is quite simple really, when on holiday, for each day and place I visit, I note the number at the start of the shoot and then at the end, so for example, when I visited Lisbon,Rome,Pisa etc. I have a record of the numbering sequence for each place visited, then I know exactly where to find them when imported into VS.
Using insert digital media changes the numbering sequence to, as you point out, a date/time format which is not very user friendly for me.
I also use the same method when using my still camera

Hi,
I have taken note of what canuk and RobertOz said. Numbering 0001, 0002, 0003, 0004 ..... is required. (Otherwise items numbered 1,2,3, 4 present a problem. No 1 is followed by 10 and not 2,3,4....)

I have not been able to locate where to sort by 0001 etc in the program BrianCee gave. I can number 1,2,3,4,..... 10,11, .....but not 0001, 0002,0003, 0004.... 0010,0011,0012.............

I would appreciate help.
Thanks

Hi

From the Numbering panel (far Right) set

Mode = Prefix
Start = 1
Pad = 4
Step =_ (underscore)

Will give

0001_ image name .jpg

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for your input.
I seem to have slight problem here. Sort by Date in Explorer is in different order than Sort by Date in Bulk Rename Utility.
I seem to have this difference for every date.

Hi Trevor,

I omitted to add that time stamp is also different as determined by Windows Explorer and Bulk Rename Utility.

Thanks

Hi

It can be confusing when comparing different programs to sort orders.
Windows Explorer has the “Date” column, that should sort the list as created, and that should be the date the image video was taken by the camera.
You can add other columns to the window, a Date Taken may be useful for images but not for video?

Bulk Rename does not have a Date option but sorting by the Created column can be used, that should be the option you need to sort in recorded order.

By the way did you try Video Studios Insert Digital Media?

One question, why do you need to sort your video and images in taken order.?
I don’t understand the reason for mixing them when each library category can list them in order. I guess we cant all be the same and have our own ways of doing things.

The timestamp is only different for the mts files and always by 1 hour. What is the camera/camcorder device that stores the medial files?

Hi canuck,
Thanks for examining the detail.

Camcorder is Sony HDR PJ760V. (http://www.cnet.com.au/sony-handycam-hd ... 335621.htm) Bought 2011. It is outdated now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now a bit of digression, just in case someone wishes to indulge in sharing their techniques on any aspect of video editing

Camcorder takes both MTS video clips and JPG photos. I found it difficult to juggle between the camcorder and a camera. On the latest trip, like RobertOz, I started taking video clips and photos with the same camcorder. (Technical advice to me was Video cameras take good video clips and not so good photos. Cameras take good photos and not so good video clips.) But I only need a photos video journal of my travels. So, like RobertOz I take “both video and still images” with the same camcorder.

I use SD cards. Not the internal memory. I download regularly to the hard disk during travel, but do not recycle the SD cards on that trip. I bring all SD cards home. Then download contents of each card. MTS files and JPG images have original Date/Time stamp. Although it is a good discipline, but like RobertOZ, I did not think of “note the number at the start of the shoot and then at the end”. I simply take a video clip/photo of the date on the calendar, or the diary, a handwritten date, or the date on the mobile phone. (No saying it is good or bad, just something that helps me. Always willing to learn if anyone has other ideas to share about their techniques.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now to the main topic. Why does the Sort by Date in Windows Explorer differ from Sort by Date in Bulk Rename Utility? The order in Widows explorer seems right. I have tried several ways to bulk rename, each time the order is the same, and different to the Sort by Date in Windows Explorer
Thanks

BulkRename sorts the files correctly according to the dates it sees in the modified list. The problem there seems to be that BulkRename reads the incorrect time for the mts files. There is a dating problem with files on SD cards; apparently it has to do with the daylight saving time not being correctly recorded on the FAT32 file systems on the SD cards.

In any case, you do not want to sort the the files in BulkRename before you have renamed them with the 0001, 0002,.... sequence and then in Corel you only sort by Name and forget about sorting by dates

Hi

My last holiday shoot used 3 8GB SD cards

One of the cards contained 128 MTS video clips and 67 Jpeg images.
As a test these were imported to the pc using Windows Explorer Copy and Paste to the same folder.
Sort using Windows “Date Modified” showed the same order as Bulk Rename
But there does seem to be a discrepancy in the way Windows lists the modified date.
If you right click the image, select properties the Detailed tab shows the Date Taken as + one hour, that’s strange.
So yes it may be the Daylight Saving, the card being formatted during winter?

Did you change the cameras time part way through shooting the card, I must admit to being a little lax in doing that, that is correcting the time for my location?

I am on holiday next week and will be formatting the cards, if I think on I will check the recording times?

Again I like Video Studios Import Digital Media option, that gave the correct date/time taken order by automatically renaming the files for me?
And if I wish I could then use Bulk to add a prefix, (holiday) without having to sort orders.

Trevor,

do all the files (both jpgs and mts) show the 1 hour discrepancy ?

for mal38 only the mts show the discrepancy, at least they do in the image he posted.

Hi

Yes, both MTS and Jpeg show 1 hour differences.
Interestingly if you set a column as Date Taken, Windows Explorer shows the hour difference between that and Date Modified.
However Date Taken only show for images not video.

maybe Bulk is using Date Taken for its Modified data.

I will format one of my cards and do a few sample records, the cards would have been formatted prior to daylight saving.

When I use Video Studio Import Digital Media the time matches Bulk

There is a discussion on tis discrepancy problem in the BulkRename forum back in 2006 already http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/foru ... ?f=4&t=165
It appears that the problem was never solved.
DateTaken only applies to photo images. Often when you edit photos, the datetaken info is lost.

Hi Guys

I set the camera time correctly, then formatted a card
Recorded several clips intermingling Images with Video

That’s fixed it, all times now match, Bulk Convert, Windows Explorers Date and Date Taken columns all match.
Import Digital Media using Video Studio is also the same.

It would appear daylight savings was causing the discrepancy, or rather changing the cameras time after formatting the card.

I know I keep mentioning Import Digital Media but it was the only option that did not have a problem with times?

Hi,

Just as a matter of interest.
Windows Explorer shows photos and video clips in the same order I used the Video Camera. Sony's PMB (Picture Motion Browser) shows the stills and Video Clips in the order in which the camera was used.
Corel support said the problem of sort by date has been referred to their Engineers. Looks likeit may be a project for Version 8 or 9?
