VideoStudio Pro X5 - library 'sort' functions

Post by JoRogan »

Hi All

I've done a few projects in X5 now and just imported lots of photo and video media into a new library folder for the next project.

I want the library list sorted in date order so I have clicked on this, however I noticed that sort does not appear to be working correctly as all the videos appear at one end of the sort rather than spread across the whole range of dates; i.e. the media 'type' is sorted first and then within Photo or Video the dates all look correct.

So I am getting (treat the numbers as the 'date' taken):
  • Pic1
    Pic3
    Pic5
    Vid2
    Vid4
Rather than the expected 'mix' (by me anyhow)
  • Pic1
    Vid2
    Pic3
    Vid4
    Pic5
Is it just me or can others see this?
I am X5 latest version (no other patches available)

Many thanks

C.

Have you been able to "Sort by Date"

I have exactly same problem.

I have been unable to sort photos and Video Clips in date order. I am able to "Sort by Name" and “Sort by Type" successfully. No matter what I try, "Sort by Date" does not respond.

I sorted by date/time stamp in Windows Explorer. Windows Explorer can sort in date/time stamp order. However when I inserted the media in the library it reverts to Sort by Name.

All Video clips in Name Order, followed by all JPG images in Name order.

Media Sorted by Date does not come through.

When there are more than 200 Video clips and JPG images for EACH DATE of the project, it is not possible to enter each item separately.

I have written to Corel

A workaround which I have used is to sort everything in date order in Explorer and then use the excellent and free "Bulk Rename Utility" from http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php to give them a sequential name - maybe the project name followed by a sequential number - then when you put your files back into the libraries - sort by name puts them in the order you chose.

one little caution I would add - don't be put off by the main screen - see below - it is a quite powerful and versatile utility - but after a few minutes it becomes very easy to use.

I have tried "Sort by Date" inCorel Video Studio Pro X 6 and Corel Video Studio Pro X7. This is the only site I could find to under search to post a question.

I assumed that if there is a solution for Version 5, the same solution would apply to Versions X6 and X7.
You are welcome to change search options to Search Dy Date in Corel Video studio X6 and Corel Video Studio X7. Thanks

I have just seen a response by Briancee. I wil look at what Brian has offered. I will also look at his you tube posts. Thanks for this part

I have used BULK rename function in Windows Explorer. We wish to retain original "identity" of each "event". For example 00269.MTS (AVCHD video format), 00270.MTS, 00271.MTS...... and 2871.JPG, 2872.JPG.......

After preparing VSP file it may be necessary to revisit and locate a certain MTS clip, or a certain JPG image.

How do you then locate the re-named "event" by its original "identity?

In our recent travel over 16 days there were over 4500 events from one video camera. I foreshadow problmes reconciling renamed files with original name. Thanks. Mal1938

I think you can accomplish what you want this way. I downloaded the Bulk Renamer that Brian mentioned and installed it. After a few minutes I was able to use it to rename files in bulk. Perhaps the Windows Renamer will also work. The secret is to prefix each "sorted by date" file with sequential digits.

I am assuming that you have all the video/photo files for your project in one folder.

Using Windows Explorer, I first sorted all the files in the folder by the "Date Modified"
I then launched BulkRenamer and navigated to the folder containing the project files. I then selected all the files in the folder, then setup BulkRenamer to prefix sequential digits to the filename. I started at 0000 and incremented by 1 for each file. In this way the original file name was kept and it will be easy to identify each "event".

In VS X6 (which I am using) I created a new library folder and added the renamed files. You can then sort the list by "Name" and it should appear in the correct date sequence. If you sort by Date then the files are sorted by Type/Date which is not what you want.

Thanks. I have experimented with numbering 1,2,3 followed by date. It should work.

I had to digress. Corel asked me to send screen shots of the problem. I gave that priority.

When I first described the problem to Corel, Corel's first response was, "If you want your video clips to be in order in your VideoStudio Pro X6. You will need to sort them out via (Name, Type or Date)."

That was not helpful. If aprogramme is sold with with a function,it should fulfuill its role. After some more emails/complaints I was asked for the following

If you are reporting a product defect, please send us the following information:

1.) Step-by-step instructions on how to duplicate this product defect;

2.) Some of your sample files that have issues with the software if the issue is file dependence;

3.) Screen shots of the issue;

4.) Additional system information such as: operating system version, RAM, free disk space, video adapter, make and model. Printer driver version and model of printer if applicable.

I have sent the required information.

It seems that the beta testers and the programmers did not check this detail. The problemwith "Sort by Date" has obviously perpetuated itself since Version 5 as shown by the first post here.

I think I like ths site. Coversation here has responders with knowledge and willingness to share. Thanks

Simply numbering by 1,2,3 ... 4095 will not work. You will have to number 0001, 0002, 0003 ... 4095.

I doubt very much that Corel will make a change in the sort since it is not considered a serious defect or problem.
Sorting (by any parameter) is a problem with many programs. Most simply rely on the "windows sort" which of course has its own quirks. Sort by date of course is a bit vague. Since each file has several "dates" associated with it: created, modified, accessed, etc. VS seems to use the "modified" date for its sort buit only after it has sorted by type. I would think the lack of a more extensive sort has been with the program since version 1 :D

Hi Guys

There is another option to importing the clips to the pc.
Use Video Studio Import Digital Media option and the files will use the recording date/time as the file name.

Example
140307_005154_import.JPG
140307_005256_import.MTS

The second video clip being taken one minute after the image clip.

All clips will populate the library in the correct order by date and time.

I use the Import Digital Media for my video files, not really thought of using for images, but it does seem to work.
You can also select multiple folders/files so I can import both images and video in one go.

Hi
I attempted the procedure shown by lata.

I did not insert one file at a time. That would be uncomfortable to contemplate. What would anyone do when there are more than 300 files for one day of a 16 day travel. (Not good or bad just the way real life can be)

I tried to insert 19 files, combination of MTS video clips and JPG images.

It did not sucseed. Hence I repeated the trial. I inserted screen shots in a word document for you look at. (Document name is, Insert Media files did not work.doc)

I have split the document in 2 parts to keep each part less than 500 kb.

I look forward to any comment.

Thanks for the input so far. It has been great.

With the way in which your images/video are numbered, you will not achieve the result you require. You have two different sequences of numbering and VS is importing in accordance with that, all the JPG images will be kept together and all the MTS video will be kept together and in chronological order, which is the only way VS can import them.
As canuck has stated above you need to rename every image/video with sequential numbers starting with 0001, only then will VS import them in the order you require.

The process is called Insert Digital Media, different to import Media Files/ video

Go to the file menu choose Insert Media Files to Library—Insert Digital Media

I will try to give you more info if you cannot follow the process

The last window shows all clips as thumbnails.
one of the icons top is "Select All"

Hi Trevor,

The issue I have with "Import Digital Media" is the fact that VS changes the name of each clip/image to a string of numbers which are meaningless when viewed in the library. So searching for a particular clip to view can take a while, especially when you have just imported 400 images/clips. Is there a way to change the VS numbering system.

Hi

Doesn't importing any clip using any method have a meaningless name, unless you have re-named each file individually.
My camera a Panasonic 900 records to SD card, the video files are saved to a stream folder and given names starting at 00000.MTS, 00001.MTS, 00002.MTS etc
That numbering is quite meaningless other than giving a chronological order in which they were recorded. I think most if not all cameras do that.

If I wish to identify each individual file I would have to give it a unique name. That involves re-naming every single file. Obviously not practical.

The problem was to sort Video and Images in sequence of being recorded, by using Import Digital Media the file name uses the recorded date and time down to the last second.
140223_194422_IMPORT.MTS

23rd February 2014
1900hrs 44minutes 22 seconds

What process do you use to identify 200 individual images.
