ASP on Linux - Performance improved by Installing WinVersion

Post by sajnox »

Hi,

This might sound weird but here it goes. With purpose of running some tests I've installed in Linux ASP's Windows version using Wine.

After the installation I've noticed a significant performance improvement in the Linux Native version, I've asked a friend to run the same test and he has the same feedback.

Does this makes sense?

I can confirm the following:

- It's not due to ASP version update, I've installed 1.27 a week ago
- No hardware or configuration changes in my computer

Can anyone else try this as well?

Thanks for your feedback

Hi,

You are right, I'll try to be more specific

In first place I've noticed that using the same computer ASP running on windows is faster and smoother than in Linux (at least my experience), that's why I installed the Win version in Linux using Wine

The performance improvement is an overall experience, and to be specific I've noticed the following

- drawing area mask in new layers it's faster, I used to mark the first point of the area and had to wait a couple of seconds untill the second point shows up, now it's a smooth process. Also I've been monitoring the CPU % the use have decreased
- Draw an area with image with the picture on 1:1 was almost impossible, now it's working just fine
- ASP used to freeze or restart randomly while a big batch of pictures was being previewed, now it's not happening
- Everytime I started ASP I could hear the CPU fans going wild, now I can hardly hear them

My friend who is confirming this, is a sysadmin of a large media company, he knows what he is talking about when it comes to it issues

Interesting,
because apart from layer handling it is usually faster on Linux as the I/O system is much faster.

All related to the video drivers and how they are accesses.
What driver are you using on Linux?

That sounds rather peculiar...
Definitely not in line with my experience....

What driver are you using on Linux?
I have a GE Force 620 and using the Nvidia propietary Drivers (Don't recall the version right now, what I do recall is using the version suggested by default)

I've read that the latest Ubuntu version (Saucy Salamander) is providing support for Nvidia-Prime which should improve the performance of the video card (I'm planning to update today and run the test)

Which Linux Distro do you use? Is the difference between 32bit vs 64bit something remarkable, or just a little bump?

Grab the latest from Nvidia. The distro drivers are usually horrendously outdated.

Looks like an interesting experiment...

Ubuntu 12.4 on a TP 520 with a Nvidia card (and another with 13.4 on AMD).
If you have significantly more memory than 4GB, I strongly suggest using a 64bit system. Not really an issue for AS, as it is only a 32bit app anyway, but overall system performance is better.

It does work faster after the windows install. It is noticibly faster when adding and adjusting layers and when moving to and from 1:1 /fit screen. Now, will the Linux version stay faster when the windows trial runs out. (my linux Key came back invalid on the windows version)

There is no OS specific key.
