Computer Options for Best Use with VideoStudio Ultimate X6?

Post by SeaLyon »

I am about to purchase VideoStudio Ultimate X6 and my trial use has shown that I need to upgrade my laptop as well. Since my plan is to use this new laptop primarily for video editing, I'd like to get a machine that will work well with VideoStudio. I'm looking at a Lenovo Y510p multimedia laptop with the following components:

Intel i7-4700 quad-core processor,
Windows 8,
8G of memory,
NVIDIA GeForce GT750M GDDR5 2GB (1 card or 2?),
24G SATA SSD (for Win8),
full HD graphics (1920x1080),
1TB drive (5400 rpm)

I'm a bit concerned about the 5400rpm drive, would a 7200rpm drive provide much better performance? I could install a TravelStar 1TB 7200rpm drive instead if necessary. The other issue is whether VideoStudio can make use of dual GT750M graphic cards (which is supported by the Y510p). Could you comment on the benefits (if any) of using dual graphic cards? If this isn't supported by VideoStudio at the moment, are there plans to support dual-cards later? How much benefit would maxing out the system memory to 16G provide?

All-in-all, do you feel the Y510p will provide a capable hardware platform for video work with VideoStudio? Are there any other sub $1000 machines that have proven to work well with VideoStudio? I appreciate any help.

Thanks.

If you look at my profile (under my photo avatar), you will see I have an HP i7 with less properties than the Lenovo you are looking at. I have absolutely no problems using it for the most demanding video editing I can throw at it -- which these days tends to be AVCHD, though I am just starting to play around with 4K footage from my GoPro Hero 3 camera...

Note that my HP only uses a 5400, and not a 7200, disc.

Note, however, I am still using Win 7. A few users are reporting various problems with VS and Win 8...

Problems with version X6 and windows8. Voiceover stalled for 20 seconds and returned message "Device driver not found" "Device error. Cannot open the wave-in device" Solution close Corel project and reopen !!

EDIT project play - playback stopped to do some editing - Corel responds with "(Not Responding)" and freezes for about 30 seconds.

SOUND MIXER - whilst adjusting sound level the audio muted - "\Corel ( "Not Responding)"

Whilst reducing the length of a music track the software froze, background in Timeline changed from dk grey to black to dk grey, reduction stopped, software froze and then a memory warning appeared. Click anywhere in the edit screen and a Corel window appeared "Out of Memory". Before closing Corel memory usage was checked and found that less than 25% of memory was being used. Closed Corel, reopened Corel and project and continued without memory issue but software still freezing.

These problems have persisted even after a clean download and clean boot and without turning on background applications.

My other laptop running windows7 did not have any of these problems and Corel could be pushed "to the limits"
Help requested.

I really don't want to turn this into a Win8 vs. Win7 thread but Win8 is the only OS option for the Lenovo Y510P I'm looking at, so I guess digging a bit further here has some merit for me. Are these problems repeatable? Can any other forum members running Win8 duplicate your problem areas with X6? Does your machine have trouble running any other software? Is your Win8 installation fully updated with all fixes and service packs? Are the hardware specs the same on your Win7 Pro machine? If not, then it's pretty tough to compare the operation of the Win7 machine with the Win8 machine -- just too many variables.

What has Corel said about your Win8 problems? They list VideoStudio X6 as Win8 compatible. Any other comments on Win8 issues with X6?
