Do I need a good video card?

Post by Klaus Christo »

Ok seeing no one seems to know why I get the message 'failed to load template file' whenever I try to do submenues, and seeing it only started happening after my video card died.
I am now asking desperately if I need to spend another $250 for a new video card so I can run this program effectively.
Also I still havn't gotten a reply from ulead about my serial number not working since i reinstalled the program!! what a pain :?:

Personally, I haven't responded to that thread because I have no idea what's causing the error message, I have never seen it before. But if this is something that started happening after you switched video cards, I would guess that remnants of the old card's drivers or other supporting software are at fault, or possibly the uninstaller for it.

Check to make sure you have the latest WHQL-certified drivers for your card. Run Windows Update to check for updates to the drivers and / or Windows. Run DXDIAG (using Start -> Run) to make sure that DirectX and the graphics card drivers are functioning properly.

The Error Message means VS can not load a Template from one of its files, and so can not display the environment correctly, Desktop, Menu, etc.

If the video card is new then uninstall VS, reinstall, this should also correct the serial number issue, so says Tech support, at least it did mine.

The drivers that came with the NEW Video card should be sufficient and up-to-date.

Then you will have to go the long route, and hope you are successful. You didn’t say whether you were using MS Drivers or Drivers from the Video Card Install Disc for the New and what was installed for the old. I assume the latter.

Uninstall your Video Card drivers. You will be asked to reboot, do so, during reboot hit the F8 key and go to Safe Mode. Reinstall your Video Card Drivers, reboot to the Desktop. When in the Desktop reinstall your Direct X Drivers. You should have a copy of Direct X on your Video Card Install Disc. If you are running MS Win with XP and latest updates, you need Direct X version 9.c. You may have to download the latest version from Microsoft; after doing so go to MS and look for any OS updates.

If VS still does not work, then uninstall once again, delete the Ulead System Folders, there are two, then reboot to Safe Mode, install VS.

One of the main troubles you run into when installing a New or replacement Video Card is a driver compatibility issue. This is caused because your Old Video Card and drivers were compatible with your Motherboard AGP Driver, and XP’S drivers, and all were installed in a specific sequence. Every version of each of these components is critical in maintaining stability. Some of those drivers are known to overwrite other driver versions that once worked. This is especially true of the Motherboard VGA and AGP Driver.

New applications will sometimes install Templates based on a specific graphic environment so they can display properly. If the Video Drivers are not working together then the Applications Template may also not work.

If you have tried all of the above and you still can not get the Drivers to function and VS to work, having applied all of available updates and patches, you have damaged the original OS installation. If VS does not work and your system is stable, then it is time for Ulead Tech support.

Updating recently installed Video Card Drivers often can make things much worse. Many do not realize Microsoft installs severely limited version of drivers they know to work with their OS. This means, MS may use an Old Driver version compared to the newest Video Card Manufacturers driver. Additionally, and will not update those drivers as they are the best that work with the original OS. Change this setup and some are in for Hell, others have no difficulty switching Cards. That means the same version drivers from the Video Card Manufacturer may not work. This is unfortunate, but this is the way MS does business.

Wow I read all that and wondered if it wasn't just a bit too much trouble, so I opened vs8 and presto no problems, but is this ridiculous or what. Should I phone tech support, its a bit costly from australia but I think I will have to try and get an simple answer to this one.

All right, you just scared the Hell out VS!! Don’t make the phone call; use E-Mail Tech support, a bit slower.

The Error you are experiencing is usually associated with an ActiveX Control; the exchange with a CommonDialog Control request that has failed. It could be many things, depending on the Controls and the request to those Controls by the errant App. Often it is a mismatch between what is called and what is actually on hand that is not accepted. i.e. a font, etc. It can also be other problems.

Lately Microsoft has just changed several of its Active X Controls for Security purposes; you’re probably suffering from those changes. Microsoft has several hundred snippets of code that keep watch on Apps and make changes as necessary. Sometimes it takes a while before an App settles down, and sometimes it never does.

I doubt that Ulead would have an immediate answer for your problem, as what you are experiencing is very common at present. However, if the problem does reoccur I would certainly contact Tech Support with the info. Logging complaints and problems is very important for Tech Support, it is the only way they know something is really broken.

I would gladly email tech support, but I have not found their email address after spending a long time going around in circles on the ulead web site. Can someone give me their address? I am also considering a radical system restore to a few weeks before the error came up because its now happening all the time on the sub menues.

I think the real issue here is that the DVD templates are not installed or not installed well.

Be sure that you have installed all the components of VS9 from the CD or through the SmartDownload.

Please contact Ulead Technical support for ideal reinstallation process.
