thumbnails and edit window are black

Post by revmatthew »

Hello:
I just know I've posted about this before, in years gone by, but I've forgotten something simple.
I have VideoStudio ultimatex6, but have an older computer with x5pro. When I load up my avi files, the thumbnails in the library and the edit window show only as black, though the clip name shows beneath the clip. And the clip plays clearly in the preview window that pops up when you ask it to.
I have the program on another computer and this is not a problem. All is fine. What I have assumed is there is a setting somewhere that does this - yet, comparing one to the other, I can't see any difference in the way the units are set under preferences. No doubt, there is some silly little thing causing me to think bad thoughts.
So, I want to take the computer - which does have the specs for the program - to the cottage and leave the behemouth home. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Its' and xp pro sp3 machine and all updates on machine and program are installed.

Hi

I don’t really understand what you intend to do with the two computers.

The XP seems to have a problem reading AVI files, however you do not say what type, I can only assume DV-Avi from a MiniDV type camera?

There are no settings to choose within Video Studio to change the black thumbnails.
Most likely a codec problem with the XP machine.
Have you installed any codec packs other than ones that come with the software programs.

Corel do recommend installing K-Lite, a codec pack, do a search of the Knowledge Base.

The most effective way to fix this is probably a re-install of the operating system.
I assume you have re-installed Video Studio
As you own Video Studio X6, why not install that on the XP Machine, yes you are allowed to do that.

Oops I should have been more detailed.
I wanted to take the XP machine on a venture. And, since I can install Video studio 6 I will do that.
Didn't think it would work on XP - this will be fun.
Thanks for the reply.
I'll also look at K-lite. I suspect as well, that it is a Codec Issue.
Also found a codec tool called GSpot Codec information appliance. Helps a lot.
Again, thanks I'll carry on.

Hi Again:
Just to follow up and put closure on this.
I think XP even with a spunky computer, is not happy with newer versions of Studio (5 & 6)
They loaded, crashed, K lite didn't help, as others did not.
Oh well.
So, I found that on my little netbook is windows movie maker - a really simplistic thing, but can edit clips and provide transitions.
So for the trip, I'll stick with that.
I use x5 at home and x6 at work. Both run well, on 64 bit machines on windows 7 & 8. No problems there at all.
Just was trying to do too much.
such is life.
thanks for the comeback.
all the best.
