Sound when playing clip in overlay track?
Hi.
In edit, when I select Clip and play a clip on an overlay track, there's no sound. Yes, I can first click on the sound mixer and then it plays but what a waste of time. Project will play but then I have to isolate the clip. How do I get sound playing under Clip when the segment is in one of the overlay tracks?
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Sound when playing clip in overlay track?
Hi Mike
And welcome to the forums
A little more info would be useful, what version of video studio are you using?
There is a small issue regarding editing and audio, I have noticed that after adding a filter from the FX library, with the library still selected there is no sound on clip playback, project playback is ok.
If you click the top icon to select the media library, the clips play ok, as I say only when FX is highlighted do I have an issue

Re: Sound when playing clip in overlay track?
Hi Trevor.
I'm using the trial version of VideoStudio Pro X6 with the Ultimate pack also installed, just downloaded two days ago. (That was the only way to get the Ultimate to install which I've purchased but haven't entered the serial code since until I get suitable answers to my two issue, I plan to get a within 30 days refund.)
Just tried installing the service pack but I'd guess since I haven't recorded the purchase in the software, it won't install.
Yes, a clip will play when accessed from the media library but not from an overlay track.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Sound when playing clip in overlay track?
Hi Mike
I was not referring to playing the clip from the library.
If you have FX highlighted/selected I find the clip audio does not play.
Click the top icon which activates the library and deselects FX
Now try playing the clip in the timelines. Do they play ok
If no then there is a problem with your video types, or rather VS is not reading the properties correctly.
Please right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they?
may be easier to attach an image of that window.

Re: Sound when playing clip in overlay track?
Hi Trevor.
Attached are the video properties of a clip in the overlay (and also similar clips in the video) tracks. All were shot as video using a Canon 7D or a Canon T3i DSLR (same camera processor).
I made sure FX was not selected. The video clips were selected in the icons in the top middle.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Sound when playing clip in overlay track?
Hi Mike
The canon SLR uses Mov H264 compression, however Video Studio does not seem to read these clips correctly, the Compression data being empty, view your image.
In fact VS cannot create a Mov using H264.
I have the Canon 7D, good camera, but use for still images, I don’t use for video other than testing and a limited amount of video, but never used the overlay track
I am having the same problems with the audio that you describe, not the news you were hoping for.
I will do some more tests but don’t think I will get any where other than using a third party converter to render to a more suitable/editable format.
So what are you intending to make, a video for the internet or a disc, if a disc DVD or Bluray?
That will give me an idea what settings to use in converting the video.
I have to say I think it is a Corel problem, I think they should be able to handle Mov H264.
Update
Reducing the clip volume from 100% to 99% allows the audio to play
Double click a clip in the overlay track, opens the Options panel, Edit Tab, reduce the volume level from 100%

Re: Sound when playing clip in overlay track?
Hi Trevor.
I really appreciate your help. It really has been helpful. No need to invest more time.
Since I'm still in a grace period, I think my best option is to switch to different software. When I encountered these issues, I downloaded Cyberlink's. It freezes occasionally but it does work on these videos which matters a lot to me.
Thanks again,
Mike

Re: Sound when playing clip in overlay track?
Hi Trevor,
I'm having the same problem with no sound in overlay clips.
If you do what you say in your update it initially works. But then click on the Media icon in the library and go back and select the clip in the timeline again (or click Clip in the preview window)...then the sound is gone again.

Re: Sound when playing clip in overlay track?
Thanks Tommy for that info, I will look further but don't think I will find a solution.
What type of video are you using, are they Mov H264?

Re: Sound when playing clip in overlay track?
Hi Trevor,
Sorry for the delay in my response. I've been trying to find a solution and also I'm upgrading one of my compters to Win7.
Yes, I'm using Mov H264 from my Nikon DSLR, and MJPG.Avi from my Canon point&shoot. They both exhibit the same sound situation when used as overlay clips.
The only times I can hear sound is when I choose a clip and click the Edit option (not Attribute). It's not necessary to change the volume or any other value. Just choosing the Edit pane makes the sound present. The other time I can get sound when the clip is chosen is by clicking the Sound Mixer button. It doesn't matter if the Clip is chosen by actually clicking on the clip in the timeline or the Clip word in the the Preview Window.
Interestingly, when you get sound by either way above, the size of the clip in the Preview Window is always changed from what it was. I believe this is to make editing an overlay clip easier since the size of an overlay clip is small by default, if I read the manual correctly.
I also tried Preferences->Edit Tab. Then checked "Use Fit-to-Screen as default size in Overlay Track" but it didn't make any difference to the sound issue.
It doesn't really matter too much to me at this point. It's just a small nuisance. I'm really much more concerned with being able to view my Nikon videos smoothly in the Preview window and getting high quality output. But that's for another thread!
Thanks Trevor,
Tommy12

Re: Sound when playing clip in overlay track?
Hi Tommy
There are two problems in audio playback which may confuse the issue, all refer to the overlay track.
1 / Clips within the overlay track DO NOT play audio when in clip playback mode. No audio at all.
For me this is using my Canon 7D video files, as far as I know these are Mov H264
2 / Clips in the overlay track seem ok, but on occasions there no audio, this seems to be associated with the FX icon being selected, clicking another icon to deselect FX and audio plays. Usually I select the top icon for the media library then my clip plays ok
Hope that helps.
Corel are aware of the QT Mov H264 issue (VS cannot create this format) and can replicate the audio problems using Canon files, lets hope they come up with a fix.

Re: Sound when playing clip in overlay track?
Hi Trevor,
1) Click the Sound Mixer button. If I click it again to get rid of the sound mixer then the sound is gone again.
2) With the clip is highlighted in yellow in the timeline, select the Edit pane in options and I get sound, and the preview window is still in clip mode. With the Attribute tab selected instead, the sound is gone.
Both of the above work even if FX library is selected.
I, too, hope that Corel makes H264 Mov DSLR video clips work better with VS. The other popular editors are way ahead of Corel on this matter.
Tommy
My experience is might be a bit different than yours, with both my Nikon DSLR and Canon point-and-shoot videos. I actually DO get audio when in clip playback mode in the preview window if I do one of two things:1 / Clips within the overlay track DO NOT play audio when in clip playback mode. No audio at all.
For me this is using my Canon 7D video files, as far as I know these are Mov H264
1) Click the Sound Mixer button. If I click it again to get rid of the sound mixer then the sound is gone again.

Both of the above work even if FX library is selected.
When I double-click an overlay clip the FX library automatically gets selected, too, and the Attribute tab also opens. The clip playback mode automatically becomes selected and there is no sound. But if I choose the Edit tab then I get sound and the clip playback mode is still selected. Or, alternatively, like you, if I choose another icon I will also get sound, and that might be associated with the mode being automatically changed to Project playback mode when another icon is selected.2 / Clips in the overlay track seem ok, but on occasions there no audio, this seems to be associated with the FX icon being selected, clicking another icon to deselect FX and audio plays. Usually I select the top icon for the media library then my clip plays ok
