Sony Nex 6 lens distortion profiles

Post by flowerdealer »

I've tried the new version of After Shot, but the lens distortion profiles for the sony nex 6 do not seem to be doing anything (no effect when applied). Am I'm missing something?

ASP uses the Panotools lens correction model (as far as I know). Three parameters a, b, and c need to be determined to correct lens distortion.
Probably your lenses are not yet calibrated. Unfortunately this is the case for many lenses. In the "Lens Correction" tab, does it say "Uncalibrated Lens"?
When you click the "Manual" tab, are all parameters set to 0.000000? Then your lens is not calibrated.
You have several options:

(a) Wait for Corel to fix this.
(b) Find the correct lens correction parameters somewhere online, e.g., in the LensFun database (see http://svn.berlios.de/wsvn/lensfun/trun ... r-sony.xml)
(c) You determine the parameters yourself using test pictures and a tool like Hugin.

Yes, it comes up as uncalibrated. I guess I was just hoping that this would be included with the supposed updated profiles, as the lens distortion is quite extreme for the sony lenses that I have. I guess I'll hold off on buying AfterShot for now, until this feature (and adequate noise reduction) is implemented. Hope it does because I like the software otherwise.

Or, you can have a look at this guide which I wrote to help myself and other people with uncalibrated lenses to get a proper set of calibrations parameters - without having to resort on the inferior results Hugin mostly seems to produce.

If you manage to take good calibration photos - several are needed for zoom lenses - the rest is very simple work.
Please have a look in the thread at the kind of photos I, and also afx, used for the calibration point calculations.

Good luck!

You might find this interesting, too: http://wilson.homeunix.com/calibration
A web page where you can simply upload some suitable photos and you get your calibration data emailed to you. Haven't tried it myself, I like doing it via g3data, but it might be worth a shot...

Cheers,
