Paintshop Pro issues

Post by SteveF48 »

I have just removed Paintshop Pro X5 from my Windows 7 PC, because it crashed most times when I launched it. It also just hung for many minutes.
I installed it on my core i5 Windows 8 laptop and am having similar issues. The program started 15 minutes ago and is showing the round busy icon and not much else.
What is is doing? Searching the known universe for images? Contemplating its navel (does software have a navel?).
Does anyone have a clue why I'm having performance issues just after installing the software?

So many possible areas. This is honestly best handled by support over the phone if you can do so.

If you are still within your 90 days of ownership you can get free support. Log into your account and start a ticket. If not, you'll have to pay. But for dedicated support the price isn't too terrible. Though I would agree with many that paying to figure out why their software doesn't work is hard to swallow.

Here we can go over a few possibilities but it's hard to know for sure. Unless someone knows how to detect what PSP is doing?

The first one that comes to mind is cataloging. Though for me this usually just slowed down the system it didn't cause crashes. Do you have a large set of images on your computer currently?

You're right it goes very much against the grain to pay for support.
I do have 90k photos on my computer, but as I've just started using PSPX5 I wouldn't expect them to be in the catalogue.
PSP eventually came to life on my laptop. I managed to navigate to a folder containing images (681 jpegs, 2 videos and xmp files for each jpeg), but could only see the first picture. The film strip at the bottom shows lots of squares with circles in them.
That was enough for me to give up for the day.
I'm disappointed, because I've been using PSP for about 20 years and it has worked in the past. Browsing was never terrific, but it wasn't slow. Now it may be wonderful, but life's too short for me to bother to find out. I'm going to cut my losses and delete PSP.

They aren't in the catalog yet, but PSP starts cataloging images early. Things like a corrupt database, or large amounts of images to catalog can cause problems for PSP.

So I can recommend two things, first delete the current database just in case it's been corrupted by the many crashes.

C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Corel PaintShop Pro\15.0\Database\ImageDB.db

Next, the next time you start PSP have the Process Explorer open (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and when you see the "Media Cataloger" program show up, end it.

If I'm right, and I'm usually not, PSP should start up and you can either turn off cataloging altogether or you can decrease the amount of automatic cataloging by removing some of the folders it looks in.
