AfterShot Pro 2.0 Research
Re: AfterShot Pro 2.0 Research
I shoot jpg+raw and would love to have ASP treat jpg+raw as one image (group them), and let me flag *both* copies as rejects in one go. I have not been able to find any linux tool that provides this functionality. Feel free to PM me if anybody has suggestions for other tools that will let me do this for the initial culling of images.

I would really appreciate this too.jallis wrote:would love to have ASP treat jpg+raw as one image (group them), and let me flag *both* copies as rejects in one go
Try Geeqie. You can even enable/disable the file grouping there. I use it for the same purpose. It is also possible to open selected images in any editor (ASP, Gimp) directly from Geqie, run scripts (dcraw, ImageMagick), etc.jallis wrote:I have not been able to find any linux tool that provides this functionality
For me, the biggest problem of ASP are the camera input profiles. ASP does not convert my Sony A-500 files very well by default, lots of the color tweaks are necessary, also noise reduction is essential even at base ISO, thus the speed advantage has gone. However, I understand that the mainstream camera brands are handled better...

Re: AfterShot Pro 2.0 Research
I should be happy to participate in the testing process.
I will be available within the second half of August.
I understand that (without going thorugh all the messages in this thread)
there is nothing further to let the developers know about my wish to participate.
I am on Linux, by the way...
Cheers,
Bulent

Re: AfterShot Pro 2.0 Research
For me the main question is, will ASP 2.0 be a paid upgrade (I'm quite sure it will be) ? And in that case, will you have the decency to provide a steep (and I do mean steep) discount for all the users that have been ignored or bullshitted since, well, years ?
Considering the past, and despite my initial great enthusiasm and evangelization, there better be a damn good reason for me to consider putting any more money in ASP.
Thanks for your consideration.

Re: AfterShot Pro 2.0 Research
Thank you for the update. Good to hear that ASP development will continue!
For me, this is easy to answer: Please provide continued support for various camera profiles and/or DNG. The basics of ASP are solid but the tool is severely hampered by the relatively small number of supported cameras. I have mentioned in other places on this forum that support for Fuji EXR sensors and .RAF raw file format would be fantastic. Nearly all of the other major players in the RAW converter software market support either one or the other. Even Corel's own PaintShop Pro X5 supports Fuji .RAF files (and does a very good job handling them). It does not seem unreasonable to expect that their flagship/pro RAW converter should be able to do the same basic tasks as their general consumer photo editor.
Thanks for listening and good luck to you and the ASP team!

Re: AfterShot Pro 2.0 Research
ASP needs a new plugin architecture, exposing API connections to layers, and permitting 3rd parties to add existing LR plugins to work in ASP. The plugin community deserted ASP after the customer communication disasters of the past year, and they need to be wood back with better access to the core ASP functions, an enhanced online marketplace for selling their plugins, and new development support.
Without a vibrant plugin community adding innovation to the ASP base, the future of this tool is limited.

I will pass on 2.0. After waiting and waiting for this software to get updated, I moved on to Photo Ninja. I don't really care what you want to call it, 2.0 or 3.0.

Re: AfterShot Pro 2.0 Research
I agree about the value of ASP plugins, but not about adding LR plugins. ASP has true plugins - they operate during the RAW processing pipeline. The plugin author has to specify exactly where in the pipe it should operate. Some plugins give you options about where to execute it.algreen345 wrote:ASP needs a new plugin architecture, exposing API connections to layers, and permitting 3rd parties to add existing LR plugins to work in ASP.
LR plugins operate after the processing pipeline as I understand it - they involve passing a JPG or TIFF to the so-called plugin and then reimporting the result. Not what I call a real plugin.
This is also why Photoshop-style plugins can't simply be ported to ASP - you have to deal with the processing pipeline and its tiles and how to handle layers and null pointers etc. Not a trivial task and not something that plugins that operate outside the RAW pipeline have to deal with.

I'd agree with the part about the SDK needing some work done on it.algreen345 wrote:ASP needs a new plugin architecture, exposing API connections to layers, and permitting 3rd parties to add existing LR plugins to work in ASP. Without a vibrant plugin community adding innovation to the ASP base, the future of this tool is limited.
However that is a highly skilled activity and really requires investment in the product.
The current SDK does need some bug fixes. These have been identified to the Corel ASP team a while back (2012).
An extension to the SDK would need to allow for some very neat plugins.
Suggested addition(s) to the SDK.
1. Add a new layer to an image via SDK command.
I am sure there are others that the plugin developers can add many more.
As the person who provides a service to the plugin developers for compiling on the Mac platform I would also like to be able to upgrade my compile platform from OSX 10.6.8 to the latest OSX version 10.8.4 and to use XCode 5 and QT SDK 5.x.
So I need some configuration documentation on how the install/configure XCode 5 and QT 5 to work with the ASP SDK. This should be made available in the SDK documentation.
Still learning after all these years!

I'd like to participate in the beta testing too. Im on Win 7 64 bit and own an Olympus E-620 as well as an E-510. Demosaicing is pretty bad for the latter, so I deperately hope for some improvements there.

What I'd love for SDK enhancement would be Alpha Channel manipulation for layers. Imagine all the plugins we could write if we could manipulate the alpha channel.
