Corel Videostudio has wasted enough of my time and money, so i've now gone over to Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12. Since I've bee using VS (back to version 7 which came free with a camcorder I bought) it has never been anything less than a headache. Every year a new strange problem would occur that no one on the forum had ever heard of or could fix, and would require nothing less than a total wipe from my computer's memory then re-installed. For the last 3 years I have been using a Canon 5D MKII to shoot footage on, and from the beginning VS couldn't handle the MOV files it created. It was suggested on this forum that I would need to purchase Cineform Neoscene, which would convert the MOV files to editable avi files. This cost me £60, but it did work. The downside was that the avi files were several times larger than the original MOV files, so it quickly filled up my hard drive. Then we had problems like VS not being able to create proxy files for files over 1GB in size. Not to mention it couldn't read the avi files over 1GB, which the get-around was to change the extensions to mov.
The final nail in the coffin was VS Ultimate X5 not being able to being able to give me a smooth render of MOV files I would shoot at 24fps. I wasted many hours trying dozens of different settings, and in the end I had to pay the one off fee for technical support. This was about a month ago, where I was told "we can recreate your issue, we will get back to you" I've not heard anything since. HORRENDOUS CUSTOMER SUPPORT! In my frustration at not being able to render any of my work, I tried out Sony & Adobe software. Both of these not only gave me a totally smooth render, but they also could use the original, smaller, MOV files. This will mean my hard drive will fill up much slower in future. I went with Sony in the end for 2 reasons - it was cheaper, and the reviews on Amazon were much more favorable. I picked up the latest version on Amazon for just £25. It doesn't crash all the time like VS, it feels more intuitive, it plays back HD smoothly in the TL without having to create smart proxy files.
In essence VS is total waste of time, and I suggest you try other software.
