Text on a curved margin
Hi all,
I use Paintshop Photo X3 and I am creating a series of dvd and cd labels. I know how to do curved text or text on a curve but I can't work out how to get curved margins. On some of the disc labels I want to keep my text straight but edged left to a curve margin. Can anyone help?
thank you
Garry

Re: Text on a curved margin
Use selection tool to make a curved selection (ellipse, circle) . Invert press delete key to get rid of the excess. Fill that excess with whatever colour you want for the boarder (black?). Invert selection again then Selection > Modify > Expand for how many pixels wide you want the border. Invert and delete again, and Selections none and you should have your graphic with curved / shaped border .

Re: Text on a curved margin
Hi Paul,
I am not sure you understood my question. As I said in my OP, on some of the disc labels I want to keep my text straight but edged left to a curved margin.
I want to have my text edged to a curve or arc. I did what you said but my text still remained with a straight margin. And the margin wasn't contained inside the newly created circle.
Basically you have described how to create a circled line, not a curved margin for text.
Here is what I would like to achieve.
http://postimg.org/gallery/6mdrb8h8/
On the first two the text is edged to a curved margin near the outside of the disc and on the third disc the text is edged to a curved margin near the centre.
I know how to create a circle and I know how to curve text. What I don't know is how to curve a text margin.
thanks
Garry

Re: Text on a curved margin
Here is a further example of what I am trying to achieve. The text remains straight but the margin is curved around the ball.

Re: Text on a curved margin
There is no automatic way to achieve this inside of PSP.
You have two options: 1) You can manually adjust the lines yourself. So, tab or space your way to victory. Or you can create individual text lines and just drag and drop them around.
2) You can use this script from Cassel - It fits text to fit inside a path.
Text Wrapping

Fancy Text Wrapping

Hi LeviFiction,
Thanks for the reply. I will try both and let you know how it goes.
Is there other software I can use to create what I want that I can then copy over to my image in PSP?
thanks

Use the opposite approach: edit your image in PSP, then import it into any desktop publishing software (InDesign, MS Word, Scribus) where the text capabilities are greater than PSP's.GarryF wrote: Is there other software I can use to create what I want that I can then copy over to my image in PSP?

Re: Text on a curved margin
Cassel has a text wrapping script for sale in her shop but I'm not sure if you have to use preset shapes or if your own shapes will work with it as well.
Using Paint Shop Pro versions 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 16

Re: Text on a curved margin
Unlike the other tools, Rectangle, Ellipse, Symmetric Shape, and text, most preset shapes are just regular vectors and not anything truly special. So any vector will do.

Re: Text on a curved margin
The script that is referred to is mine. It works based on a path system. And the path system can use the ones available with the script, with others sold separately or created by the user to match a particular shape they need, like in this case.
It does not need to have a vector shape, but needs to have a path in the shape one wants.

Re: Text on a curved margin
This is an excellent idea, Ken. The only drawback being, I still wouldn't know how to achieve a curved text margin with the other programmes.photodrawken wrote:Use the opposite approach: edit your image in PSP, then import it into any desktop publishing software (InDesign, MS Word, Scribus) where the text capabilities are greater than PSP's.GarryF wrote: Is there other software I can use to create what I want that I can then copy over to my image in PSP?
I have purchased Cassel's Text Wrapping script and I will see if I can learn how to use it to achieve what I want.
If I fail with Cassel's script, your idea will be my fall back option.
Presently I am into my 12-13 month of what I thought would be a 3-4 week task.
The bliss of retirement.

Garry

Re: Text on a curved margin
I'm sure the scripts will do just what you need.
if you decide you need to use another program, Inkscape is easy. It's called Flow Text. But as I said, those scripts should work out just fine.

Re: Text on a curved margin
I have Inkscape here actually. I use for some vector graphics. I never thought of it ...
Re: Text on a curved margin
Just a note to all to say thank you for all the replies and ideas. I bought Cassel's script and it does exactly what I want.
Again, thank you all.
