Thank you for that Linda Sue. Have downloaded and placed with Version and downloads. I rarely use PSP 8 nowdays unless to investigate problems raised by others. Amazing what can be found in odd places on the Corel site.

Did I miss a post? Does that mean you are now consistently getting checkerboard?

On everything except your clock image. That one is still giving me trouble. It's not just in PSP. None of my other graphics programs see it as transparent either.

Sorted! It's the file after all, not your configuration.

I originally uploaded it by copying it from its source
C:\Docs\My Videos\PROJECTS\MISC, TESTS, DEMOS etc\Clock\Clock-Nohands-OnGreen-50-Alpha.png
to my Dropbox folder
C:\Docs\My Dropbox\Public\Clock-Nohands-OnGreen-50-Alpha.png
That should then have been identical on the Dropbox site, allowing subsequent downloads by anyone knowing the URL.

When I checked last time it never occurred to me to download it, I merely opened it from C:\Docs\My Dropbox\Public\Clock-Nohands-OnGreen-50-Alpha.png.

But as a longshot I've just tried that, and I got no checkerboard either. So I repeated the upload and tried again, using
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/401 ... -Alpha.png

... and this time it displays the transparency!

Please try it again - I bet it will be OK.

I can only assume that Dropbox, which has always given me reliable service, changed the file somehow? Or, more accurately, did so between the time Paul downloaded it (and displayed it correctly with checkerboard) and the time you first did so. All very strange.

Yes, it's transparent now! I wondered if something was not quite right with the file because it showed with a white background here in the forum as well. But, Paul said that it was transparent for him so I had dismissed that theory.

Hi people :)

I have been using PSP 7.02 for years, but recently I have come across this same issue.
I read all these posts and completed suggestions but to no avail.
My version of PSP 7.02 does not have the "PNG" tab inside the "File Preferences..." box, so that work-around is untestable.
Until the last couple of days, my PSP 7.02 has worked for years.
The only system changes I can recall making is an install of Photoshop CS2 and MSOffice 2007.
Photoshop CS2 did take .psp associations from PSP 7.02, but I changed them back.

My problem is simply that, when I open a PNG file now, my transparency is now flat black or white etc as oppose to the checkerboard.
I will double check my settings against those found on https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/401 ... fs-All.jpg
However, I'm pretty sure I haven't touched anything new except for the "anti-aliasing" and "feather" options in "select mode".

Thanks

I don't see any PNG settings in PSP7 other than in the PNG Optimizer. Do PNG images that used to be transparent in PSP7 now have a solid background or is it just new ones that you create? If it's only new images, then maybe a setting got changed in the Optimizer (don't use the Wizard). Another thing you might try is updating PSP 7.02 to 7.04 with this patch:

Do you have any other versions of PSP installed on your computer? I've had a problem similar to this in the past after I've changed the PNG setting in another version. Sometimes the PNG setting in one version can affect other versions. That shouldn't be the case, but it has happened to me.

Hi LindaSue! I went over this post several times in the efforts to iron out my issue. Needless to say after a year, I'm quite familiar with everything you've said here lol.

This happens to be the only version I've installed. I did play with the photoshop settings, I don't suppose there's some kind of library file/s that the two programs have in common?

The problem is still true with old PNG files that were created from before this issue arose. The PNG optimizer seems to have all the default settings, and I can concur that there are no PNG settings in the File Format Preferences in my version.

It's strange. I installed photoshop, played with feather and antialias for the first time (I probably should have read the book when I had it. I would have been using those two tools all these years lol. :) ) and bam, the PNG files all have black backgrounds, also in preview as well.

I've never seen this before, but then again I never ever used photoshop, despite having bought the whole creative suite.

Would you know where I can find information on that update? I've been robbed twice now and this's my only install left, I really want to look after it :)!

I don't have a list of what issues were addressed with the 7.04 patch and I don't see any release notes for it on the Jasc/Corel server. It can't hurt to install the patch though. It IS the official patch from the Corel server so it's safe, if that's what you're worried about.

Make sure that your PNG Optimizer has these settings:

Colors tab: 16.7 million colors
Transparency tab: "Alpha Channel Transparency" and also "Existing image or layer transparency".

Thanks :)

Yea I have checked those. I remember how exciting it was to find those options some years ago lol. Changed my digital career :)

I feel it's definitely something to do with the photoshop install because that's all I really changed on my PC.
