splitting layers on opening.

Post by mikeyred »

Hi, newbie here..... I have just upgraded to W7 and a new computer and now find that when I drag in directly from a folder or open from within X4 the images that are saved as PSD file (originally created in Photo Shop by a friend for me), opens all layers individually rather than one image with all the layers contained to edit. Before the update to W7 I had Vista and the image went in to X4 as expected, contained as one image with editable layers.

I appreciate that it may (hopefully) be obvious to most but I can not see for looking as far as a solution is concerned. I'm not sure it it is a W7 issue or and to reset - hope someone can help - cheers!

I don't have a solution for you but I did try to replicate your issue with both X4 and X5. Here's what I found:

X4 -- I cannot drag psd from a folder to the PSP workspace; however, I can open a psd via the file -> open menu as a single image with multiple layers.

X5 -- I can both successfully drag from a folder to the PSP workspace and open a psd via the file -> open menu as a single image with multiple layers.

So to recap, psd file layers are behaving as they should but I don't seem to have the drag and drop capability in X4 that you have.

Thanks Kathy, to be honest, I would be happy to get what you have got with X4 and just be able to open from within. I'm just checking for any updates at the moment but looks like I'm up to date. Will see if it is a problem with W7 professional which I have, in case W7 is trying to be too clever but would have thought I would at least get what you have with X4 in W7, will try a reboot, in-case it is something as simple as that but me thinks I would not be that lucky...... :?

Just as an FYI, we're both on W7 Professional but since each system is unique, who knows?

Just an afterthought - are you certain the psd file you are opening was last saved with layers intact? In other words, is it possible that it was inadvertently last saved as a merged/flattened file?

Yes, the layers are intact. I have adobe CS5 but have never used it because I'm happy with Paintshop, plus and more to the point I can't be bothered to learn how to do everything....... complacency - I know :) . If I open in photo shop all the layers are there but come within one image as you would expect. It appears to be just Paintshop that splits up all the layers as individual images

This is a bug. It has something to do with a layer style or blend mode that Photoshop has that PSP doesn't. For whatever reason, when it encounters that it starts creating new images with each new layer.

That would fit but not sure why it worked okay on the last computer, granted, I did not edit, I just opened from the email and it opened correctly and could select each layer. I might write to Corel to see if they have a patch for the bug.... annoying realy X4 fly's on my new one with the 8 core, etc. There must be a way...... he says hopefully. Thanks for the info both of you...

Just tested on an XP Home computer.
In Photoshop CS2 I set up three transparent layers.
I painted with different colours on each of the three layers a series of lines and squiggles.
I saved it as a psd file on the desktop. Opened up a desktop window.
Loaded it back into CS2by drag and drop and the layers were present.
Opened up PSP X5, X4, X3, X2 separately and dragged and dropped from a desktop window into the workspace of each.
In all cases the psd file opened and showed the three layers.
When working on a problem use the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid).
So by examining different psd files and finding out which layers / effects cause the problems you should be able to locate the source of your problem.

BTW when I saved that as a .psp file andtried to load it into CS2 it refused to load. So PSP is more compatible with other programs files than Photoshop.
Another plus for Paintshop Pro.
