Change Video size
I'm new to Corel. I have done some video editing. I have used Premiere in the past. I am importing dv video and the size captured is 740 x 480 from my Sony DV camera. It is an older camera. First Digital Hi-8. When I produce a video and play it in a player on the pc it is displayed in whatever size I want, including full screen. When I burn a dvd it only plays in a small window, I'm assuming 740 x 480. Is there a way to produce a video that will take up the entire tv screen. I'm only concerned with 4:3 ration, not widescreen at this time. Thanks in advance.

Re: Change Video size
Hello,
given that you are in the USA then 740 x 480 is the standard size for 4:3 full screen video on the NTSC standard.
have you tried playing your DVD on other TV's and players - the problem is more likely to be a setting on your TV - try going through the display settings - on some TV's if you have set widescreen then 4:3 videos may be displayed as you are seeing - check your TV settings see if you have a 4:3 setting or an "automatic" setting which solves the problem. My TV also has display settings labelled "Cinema" and "Movie" which also change the size of the onscreen image.

Re: Change Video size
Thanks for your reply. Let me add some details. I am using Corel VS Pro5. In answer to your question, yes I tried it in my dvd player and my laptop. The result is the same on both players. The dvd has been produced correctly in that it has a menu and i click on the video to play it- it plays fine but it is only about 1/3 the size of the screen and there is no way to adjust it on either the laptop player or the dvd player. I'm saying the video has to be formated somehow before it is burnt. If I play the video that I'm using to place in the timeline (note that it is an avi file) it plays fine on the pc or any other laptop I play it in. It is sizeable, in other words it can be adjusted to full screen or made smaller.

Re: Change Video size
I'm saying that the size for a full screen standard definition video for use in an NTSC country is 740 x 480 - your video does not need to be any different size. Are you sure you did not change the size of the video during the "Create disc" phase to something much smaller.

Re: Change Video size
First off, when you finished editing your DV/AVI, did you first convert it to DVD-compatible mpeg-2: Share > Create Video File > DVD? This would be our recommended workflow. After that mpeg-2 is produced, you start a new project -- don't bother with a name as the objective is just to clear the timeline. Then select Share > Create Disc > DVD. The burning module opens and its timeline should be empty -- if it's not, delete anything that is there. Then manually Add Media i.e. your new mpeg-2. Build your menu and burn.
Since your original video is 4:3, this should produce a DVD which will fill the screen from top to bottom BUT not from side to side. There will be black bars on either side of the video. That is what 4:3 is all about, and after that it is up to your DVD player to zoom or whatever to fill the screen -- though you will then probably lose some of the top and bottom of the video...

Re: Change Video size
Hi
I suspect your original video clip to be 4:3 ratio.
Can you confirm this, from the timeline right click a DV-AVI clip and select properties, tell us what they are in particular the aspect ratio 4:3 or 16:9.
If 4:3 as you say and you have created a widescreen video then the video will sit inside a 16:9 frame having black borders, this will play in full screen with borders but the actual video will be smaller, as you describe.
Video Studio defaults to using 16:9
You have to change the aspect to 4:3 (settings deselect Enable Widescreen 16:9)
Create a Mpeg using 4:3
And finally burn a DVD using 4:3.
What you can do…
First Alt+Enter will open the project properties panel
Edit these to use :-
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First (to be compatible with DV-Avi)
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3 (your original settings)
Video data rate: 8000 kbps (up to 70 minutes of video)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)
After completing the editing
Share Create Video File –Same as Project Settings
This creates a compliant mpeg2 file.
Start a new project—nothing in the timeline
Share Create Disc—Add media-Add your Mpeg2 file
Create the menu and burn a disc.
I choose to burn a disc image, the ISO file can be played using VLC Media Player to check quality prior to burning the disc.
Note :- You should not change the field order of your original video file
You cannot use Share Create Video File – DVD as this option will use Upper Field and your video uses Lower Field.

Good point Trevor! I forgot about field order when I posted my response above...Trevor wrote:

Great!!! Thanks to both of you Ken and Trevor, I suspect that now I'm on the correct path. I will work on it this weekend and report back. Much appreciated!
