UFO's not opening in PI

Post by Shercal »

Hi,
There are many niggles with PI10, but this one has to be the most frustrating and disappointing of them all.

The problem is PI refusing to open some UFO's, instead displays a message stating:

"file reading error" 800:118:2604

Any clues or suggestions anyone please?

Thanks in eager anticipation.

Just curious but if I reinstall would I lose all my own presets from the Easy Palatte?

Ordinarily you will have a corrupt file association in the Registry, or a low cachelevel=x parameter, there could be other difficulties. Another MS program is conflicting with a PI file.

You can change the File Association, by right clicking on the UFO file, from the Menu, select Open With. You may get the Windows, Cannot open this file, check the Select the program from a list. Then in the Open With Dialog Box , under programs find the PhotoImpact program name. Highlight the name with the mouse, then check the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file. If you have to find the file use the Browse button to locate the EXE file. Click OK to accept the changes.

PI does have a glitch that will save a file in the wrong format from time to time and sometimes corrupt the file so it can not be opened later. On my machine when I try to save a BMP is will sometimes write photo.xxx, if I change the extension xxx back to BMP it will open. Strange behavior! Reinstallation has not helped in my case.

If you want to reinstall, and save the EasyPallette presets, in C\:Documents and Settings\your user name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact\10.0\Ulead.Dat, copy the Ulead.Dat folder and all contents to another part of your drive. Then you can safely uninstall and delete the two Ulead System Folders, in Documents and the other in Program files, and reinstall.

Thanks Keenart for your prompt reply.

I have checked the "always assoc. this type of file...........as suggested but unfortunately PI still refuses to open it. I can't get it open in any of other programme either. It's frustrating because I have spent a lot of time creating this ufo, twice, in fact. I know quite a number of users who are having the same problem.

Ulead are unapproachable it seems. Can't get them via email nor telephone.

You mentioned Registry corruption or Low level cache, not sure what is involved here but is there a way of checking these out?

I have been using PI for three years now and this is the first time this has happened.........very odd.

Thanks again Keenart

I haven't been able to find any reason for the extensions disappearing either. It seems there are some having that problem.

If you don’t have to Hack the Registry, or haven’t Hacked the Registry before I would leave it until absolutely necessary. If you do Hack the Registry make sure you create a New Restore Point so you can undue any damage you might mistakenly do.

You can read the thread about Hacking the Registry named UFO's open PI10 but aren't inserted into workspace .

I always take the precaution of saving my UFO’s in a backup extension .PSD, as insurance, since with the correct Open and Save parameters enabled while using PI, this Photoshop extension will save in layers. You can pretty much start where you left off if you have to open a backup as an original. Read the thread named .psd files in P10 .

The problem when saving as a .psd is, it does not preserve the vectors. It changes your paths to images. since most of my work is done in vectors, it doesn't help to save it as a .psd.

Good point about the Vector graphics; you can convert back to a Path object but you do loose some of the functionality. Since I work in 2D Vectors and photos this has not been a problem for me. PSD is the closest you can get to a UFO compared to any other file formats; it works for me pretty well. I can always reconstruct a vector graphic rather quickly to replace an object that isn’t working for me.

There are two other “roundabout” ways to save the information from the image and then reuse it, without loosing the Vector functionality:
1. If while creating your image you create and record a Task, you will have a complete record of the image and all of its contents you recorded. You simply open a new Image file and click on the Task you saved “your name.tsk” and your image will be created all over again. You can always delete the Task later when no longer needed.
2. The other method would be to complete the image and before saving, drag the whole selected image over to the EasyPallette dropping a copy into your personal Library. Again just open a new Image and drag and drop your New saved Library Object onto the new Image file and you have a copy of your previous file to work with.

If you know of any other file formats that will work or methods please list them.

Thank you both Marylou and Keenart for your replies.

Yeah I am pretty reluctant to hack the registry so I probably won't bother with that. It's a good tip regarding using the Task manager - I haven't used this and will gen up on it - thanks Keenart.

I have saved a copy of the ufo to the easy pallate but PI refused to open it, so I remade another ufo from scratch to avoid further problems. I saved this to the EP. However, when I dragged the ufo into the workspace some of the bits and pieces that I had created with the stamp tool, were missing! .Another curious thing that is currently happening is, when trying to open a file from PI (file, Open) It seems to take forever to get the drop down menu to appear or in most cases I get a message stating........ server busy either cancel or retry!

Thanks again for your much appreciated help.

YEP! The Task feature has saved my backside many times lately, with PI going bonkers from time to time. I found that I could not only record one session, but also stop and then later add to the recording, and keep adding until done. I could also save the Task file and copy to another part of the drive, so did have a backup of sorts.

I have been having DDE Server problems, which seems to be related to Norton, but haven’t found out why yet.

Let’s try one more idea before you try a reinstall. Go to Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, in the Dialog List Box named Registered file types: find the UFO UFO File entry, and highlight the entry. Click the Restore Button on the Dialog Box.. Click on the Change Button and see if the Open With Dialog Box has PhotoImpact highlighted as the Recommended Programs: which are to open this file type. Also check to make sure the check box at the bottom of the Dialog Box is checked named, Always use the selected program to open to open this kind of file. Try to open a UFO file to see if all works.

If all of the above is correct and the UFO file will not work, then it is the Registry. Reinstallation is the only solution. If you want to save your presets copy the Ulead.DAT Folder to another part of the drive. When you have reinstalled PI, copy the Ulead.DAT folder back over the new installation.

I did a little experimentation with the Path Objects and the Stamp Objects you spoke of earlier. I find that the Stamp objects will not automatically drag & drop to the Library with other Objects, unless you do the following:

Go to Command Menu item named Object, Select All Objects; you can now drag & drop to the Library with all Objects included. As an extra precaution you can also select Objects, Select All Objects, Group, and then drag and drop to the Library, all Objects should be there the next time you try to drag & drop from the Library to the Desktop. You will have to select UnGroup to work on individual Objects on the Desktop.

Try opening the UFO files from within PhotoImpact. Open PhotoImpact then drag the UFO files into the gray area of the workspace... or just use the "File -->open" menu.

Since you're having problems only with some UFO files, then there's a high probability that those files are corrupted. Try opening them on another computer with PhotoImpact installed to double check.
