Caught in between two stools!

Post by Longshanks »

Hi

Have been out of circulation for a while but now need to revive my interest in Video Studio. To cut a very long story short:
  • Originally used VS8
    Upgraded to VSX2
Upgraded my OS from Vista to Win 7 and obviously unable to use VSX2
I now realise that my machine dual boots XP and Win 7 so tried to install VS8 with a view to upgrading to VSX2 (I have both product codes). The problem is that I can't get VS8 to run on XP. Then again, maybe I don't need to run it, just get a link from Corel to upgrade it to VSX2.

The post title is ref to VS8 being maybe too old for XP but can't install X2 without first launching VS8.

I realise that both these are now "legacy products" but am the legitimate owner of both progs.

Does anyone know how I should proceed in these circumstances?

Thanks

Update:

Got VS8 to run by fiddling with screen resolution. Now just need to know how to upgrade from VS8 to VSX2.

Thanks

I'm rather surprised you can't get VS8 to run on XP. I am pretty sure that I used it for a long time on XP. Will it install but not run? Or won't even install? Have you tried -- if it does install -- right clicking the icon and going into compatibility mode? Or clicking 'Run as Administrator'?

As for X2, first I thought by then that Corel was not requiring the previous version to be actually installed, just that you had to enter the earlier version's serial number before proceeding to the install of X2. And second, though X2 was not fully compatible with Win 7, Corel issued a patch to make it work with Win 7 more fully. IIRC, what did not work properly in Win 7 was the screen in the burning module, where the Next button did not show -- though using a keyboard shortcut (Alt+N) achieved that even without the patch, which fixed the problem.

EDIT: Have just seen, after posting the above, that you now have VS8 installed. Hopefully the rest of my post will still be relevant to X2.

Hi

As far as I know there was a service pack for X2 aka VS 12 for Windows 7 compatibility.

You should be able to install VS 12 but require the serial number of the earlier version, in your case VS8, I assume VS8 was eligible for upgrade to VS12, it was of course some tie ago.

When you try to install VS 12 the installer should ask for the serial number of the earlier version, being satisfied it would then ask for the serial number of VS 12.

You should be logged into your pc as administrator and install the program using admin rights.

Ok just seen your last reply

As you have installed VS 8, installing VS12 should be easy as the installer should recognise VS 8 as being installed and only require the VS 12 serial number

Many thanks for these helpful replies.

If there is a patch for X2 to run in Windows 7 then I'd much prefer that option than running in XP.

I think my main difficulty will be finding the links to installing X2 on the Corel website (I have the installation disk for VS8 so that's no problem).

Are you saying that I should be able to find the link to upgrade to X2 and the service patch quite easily?

Many thanks

did you purchase and register your copy of X2 with Corel - if yes then it may be possible to download again.

Go to your account on the Corel.com website - scroll down the page until you see "Your Order status & History" - if your order for X2 is not shown click on "see all orders" you should then be able to select the X2 order and one of the options given on the "order confirmation" page will be to download again.

If you did not register or have forgotten the details you used for that account then all may be lost.

Service pack two allows X2 to run on Windows 7

The downloads for Service packs 1 and 2 for X2 can be found here - http://www.corel.com/corel/pages/index. ... id=1300014 - you need to install both.

I am wondering though whether it is all really worth it - having X2 on your computer will not qualify you for the upgrade price to X6 - Corel now only allow the last two versions as qualifying products, that is to get X6 reduced you must have X4 or X5 installed.

Personally I would cut the hassle and just purchase a copy of X6 to install on an upgraded system

Hi

This is a long shot, but if you have access to the old PC the installation files for X2 VS12 are saved to C:\Program Files\Corel\VS Installation Files

These can be used to install the VS12 program.

Many thanks once again.

Will try "My Account" and also C drive to see if I still have X2 installation files.

Appreciate your time.
