Save Mask As Image

Post by JayOh »

Hi,

Masks confuse the H out of me. I suppose the jargon doesn't gel with my imgination, or I am just dim?

I have an image, whose outline is well defined, which I am preparing for laser cutting/engraving. I am trying to find a quick and easy way of creating a cutting path around the edges of the image. Tracing in Corel Draw is not good enough. PhotoPaint will convert the mask to a path but it is not well defined. I can easily create an accurate mask with Paint Shop Pro, and even fill it with black colour, but that is as far as I can get. I have tried pasting as a new image but there is an undeleteable and unmoveable layer created which stops the image being visible. Instead of crisp black image I just get a blank white square.
Snip of the mask that I am trying to work with. I just after a black and white image of it. Simple really, or Is It?

Is there a way, which is easily understood by a frustrated idiot, to convert a mask into an image?

I feel sure that it should be possible but I'm damned if I can see it. Assistance would be very much appreciated.

1. Fill that "Raster 1" layer with white.
2. Right-click on the layer and select Merge...Merge All.
3. Fill the transparent areas in the merged image with black.

Slightly longer process, but this grabs the exact data from the Mask layer and turns it into a raster.

In your Layers palette - Select your Mask Layer

Hit Ctrl + A <- Select All

Hit Ctrl + F <- Float Selection

Hit Ctrl + Shift + P <- Promote Selection to Layer

Hit Ctrl + D <- Select None

You should now have a graphical representation of your mask on its own raster layer.

You can then copy and paste as its own image. Or just save as a JPG and it'll flatten everything on its own.

That worked a treat. I thought it could do it but I'm damned if I could fathom it from the distructions.
Anyway, mask sorted and into Corel Draw, traced and outlined. Done job
Just got to line up with the image to engrave now.
