can you make custom partical effects?

In the screen for custom particals they have lips, haerts, leaves ect.
my question is can you make a shape and have several of them fall from the sky? if yes, how?

i belive in the vasst dvd they say you CAN , they mention the attribute pannel. i'll have to look at it aaain

I believe it is a matter of changing the bitmap to the picture you want.

Just to side track a little and aplogies on this, does anyone know how to prevent the lips from disappearing?
Been trying to prevent them from disappearing, tried changing life to as many frames that I had, but it keeps disappearing.

I am trying to make a video overlay where the lips/hearts whatever fall onto the ground (that's the screen) and remain there, so ultimately the whole screen turns red (as in lips/hearts)... anyone knows how to approach this?
