Is it possible to open a disc image file to see what is on it, or can it only be used for burning a DVD

You can use the freeware VLC player which will show you what is on the disc, as well as playing it for you. Most other players will require an iso file to be 'mounted' on a virtual drive before they can play it.

I don't know about Windows 7, but with Windows 8 you can right-click on the .iso file and select "Open with > Windows Explorer," and that will open a window with the VIDEO_TS folder.

Windows 7 does not seem to provide the same option - but on right clicking on an .iso in W7 I was offered the option to open with WinZip - selecting that opened a window displaying all the files - I then found the VLC was happy to play any of the vob files - although as Ken has already said VLC can play the .iso as a DVD so you can check the whole thing out.

Thanks everyone for your help - VLC worked perfectly. Internet explorer in Windows 7 would not open it.
