Capture in AVI not MPEG

Post by TeamBomart »

Hello,
I am using VS X6 ultimate that I purchased yesterday
I am capturing videos from VHS tape using an S-Video connection
I have tried different capture options settings and the capture always saves in MPEG
I believe that AVI has the least loss and would prefer to save in the AVI format since I intend to do some editing of the original content
The end objective will be to burn reults to DVD
Can VS X6 capture files in AVI? If so, what settimgs should I use?

Do you have suggested settings that would be best for this type of transfer to HDD?

hello and welcome to the forums

The best setting for capturing VHS tapes is mpeg - VHS is at best mpeg quality and if you convert to .avi not only will you lose some quality in the conversion but you cannot add what is not there - if the information is not on the VHS tape converting to .avi cannot add anything. The saying about a silk purse and a sows ear come to mind.

Also you say you are going to burn a standard DVD - that will mean that if you convert your capture to .avi - you will have to convert it back again in order to make a standard playable DVD - yet another loss of quality during conversion.

VideoStudio will capture in .avi with a source which is of .avi quality.

There is absolutely no problem at all in capturing VHS as mpeg - editing in mpeg - and burning a standard DVD (which uses mpeg)

Thank you Brian, .MPEG it is.

I do undertsand that source quality is maximum quality and loss is an unfortunate result of creating copies and conversions. The best we can do is use the most appropriate settings to minimise loss.

I'm not sure if you hear this enough, but let me be one of the people that thank you very much for your time and effort on this forum. Based on the speed my post made it to the forum and the the speed of the answer, I see that you are very dedicated to helping others.

Although somewhat knowledgeable in the world of audio and video editing, here the saying "enough knowledge to be dangerous" applies  , I expect to be back asking questions about best uses for VS X6 and video editing with the product in general.

Again, thank you very much!

Bob
