Mr Retro Machine Wash filter

Post by Cassel »

As I am researching Adobe plugins that are working with PSP, I stumbled upon the Mr Retro Machine Wash Filters. Their description states that it requires Jasc PSP 8 and above or Corel PSP X and above to work. However, I downloaded the demo and I cannot seem to find a way to get it recognized in PSP. I tried PSP9, I tried PSPX5, I tried PSPX3 and although the filter appears in the plugins list, when I click on it, I get the error message : "Plugin requires a specific host"

Has anyone found a way to install this plugin to be used with PSP?
You can download it here and install it as a demo.

From the samples on their Web site, it looks like they want $99 to duplicate the features already in PSPX5.

I wouldn't worry about it not working in PSP....

Well, my purpose was simply to try to make a list of "big" plugins normally associated with Adobe that work with PSP even if they don't say so. I have a blog article about that and I thought I could add to it.

Right now, I don't care if they are free or paid, cheap or expensive (or even worth it), but I just wanted to illustrate a point. And I have seen this plugin mentioned in a few places but I wanted to see if I could add it to the list. (of course, if it does the same as PSPX5, that would be even better, but I didn't study it deeply enough).

Yes, I understand. That's a worthwhile endeavor.

You might want to fire off an email to Mr. Washing Machine asking about that error message. I've seen that error when the name and version of the parent application is hard coded into the plugin or filter -- for example, I think I got it when trying to use Photoshop's Liquify filter under PSP.

Thanks for the suggestion. And by the way, if you can think of other "major" plugins or resources that are associated with Adobe and DO work with PSP, you can add it in the comment of the article. It would be greatly appreciated by the PSP users who think they can't use them.

Yeah, I don't spend the money on "major" plugins, so I can't offer any names. The plugins I do use are the "little" free ones that do specific things very well.

You've said the important thing on your blog: to just install the plugin under PSP and see if it works.

I am also thinking of those Photoshop users who might already be used to some "paid" plugins and might have to consider switching to PSP for a "cloudy" reason. At least, they would be able to use some familiar resources if they work with PSP.

Even if you know only of small free plugins, don't hesitate to post them ESPECIALLY if PSP is not listed as a program those plugins work with (I was surprised to see that Filter Forge worked with PSP since it is called a "Photoshop plugin" right on the main page!)

I ended up being able to install the Mr Retro Machine Wash on my laptop and it opens in PSP. However, for some unknown reason, I cannot get it to work on my desktop. On the laptop it installed normally, like any plugin with .8bf extension, but not on the desktop.

Anyone is willing to at least try to install it in PSP? Since you don't have a license, you would not be able to use it, but at least, see if you get any error launching the plugin?
