PSP X4 - how to remove folders created on load

Post by stevetuk »

Hi, newbie here. I have an issue with PSP X4; on load the program creates folders in the root of my network drive ( M:\ ) including:
  • Brushes
  • Bump maps
  • CMYK profiles
  • Deformation maps
    [*Displacement maps
  • and so on...
I have deleted these folders manually and they are recreated each time PSP launches. I have changed the settings in File -> Preferences -> File Locations to remove references to these folder locations, and then tried deleting them, but they are recreated again on load.

Does anyone know how to remove them? They are littering my network drive...TIA.

From experience, it looks like they are there to stay, unfortunately.

They shouldn't be installing themselves in the root of your drive. They should appear in the My Documents/Corel PaintShop Pro folder or whatever they're calling My Documents on Windows 7 or 8.
Using Paint Shop Pro versions 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 16

The root of a network drive at that with a completely different drive letter.

Could blame it on moving the My Documents folder to the network drive. If stevetuk moved the My Documents folder to the network drive using the location property that would explain why PSP keeps adding these files to the network drive instead of the regular C drive. But that wouldn't explain why PSP isn't creating the normal "\Corel PaintShop Pro\15.0\*" folder structure. And that's a big speculation, if stevetuk didn't move the My Documents folder this shouldn't be happening at all.

Sorry I missed the replies until now.

There is a My Documents folder on the network drive (M: for sake of reference).
I.e. M:\My Documents

There are no PSP-generated subfolders in there. They are all in root, e.g.
M:\Brushes
M:\Bump Maps
M:\CMYK Profiles

There is a Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X4 folder in C:\ where the program is installed, but there isn't a subfolder called \15.0\* in there. Should there be?

If I moved the folders from root of M:\ to M:\My Documents\Corel PaintShop Pro\15.0\* do you think they'll stay and not end up re-created in root of M:\? Worth a try I suppose!

No, 15.0 is just what mine is because I have X5.

As for whether or not they'll stay in the Corel folder. My guess would be no. It seems insistent upon having them on the root of the networked drive.

But you could always try.

My thought is that it has to do with how the network drive is being recognized. Have you assigned a "real" drive letter to it?

Yes, I think it can be eeeeeasily done...

Well my attempt failed, as you thought: the folders were recreated in the root of the network drive again.
The drive does have a drive letter assigned as mentioned above, sorry my fault for not being clear; the drive is M:

It's odd because surely in the absence of a network drive it wouldn't be creating these in root of C:\ ?

I'm out of specific things to try, other than using PSP's Preferences...File Locations to ensure the locations listed are correct for your setup.

If that doesn't cure it, you'd still be left with two possibilities:
1. A bug in PSPX4. (Do you have its latest service pack installed?)
2. Something in your network configuration that's translating or mapping what PSP thinks is its My Documents subdirectory to the root of that networked drive.

Could be a nasty one to track down  Good luck.

Can you try installing with the Network drive turned off, so that it has no choice but to create those files originally on your C drive in My documents. Then after it is established and works a couple of times turn your M drive on and see if it behaves itself.

Ok, no success - I managed to disconnect my network drive, installed PSP 4X and then tried to load it to see if it generated the folders again only this time I just had a CTD:

Quick update: when I reconnected my network drive and tried to open PSP X4 it worked without any problems - and then duly recreated those folders...

If your network drive is setup as your userprofile or as your My Documents folder specifically, as in Windows is redirecting the profile or specific folder to this network drive then PSP will attempt to write there.

You mentioned before that the My Documents folder is inside this network drive. Did you tell Windows to relocate your My Documents folder to the network drive?

It's possible PSP can't handle this.

In which case the only real resolution is to either not use the network drive to host My Documents or to contact Corel's paid support and see if they can offer anything.
