Hi Sheila,
Their dvd burner appears to be older equipment, it has screen to watch the footage as it is being downloaded. It also has a slot for a VCR tape, which makes me think it is older equipment. It has a remote control. The tape is downloaded in real time. At the end of the first tape, the pause button on the remote control is pushed and the second tape is put in the camera. The pause button on the remote control is pushed again, along with the play button on the camera. I don't know how it works, but it does. Perhaps the dvd is not created until all the footage is downloaded somewhere in this burner, prior to the dvd being burned.
The dvd burner they use sounds like it is just a regular DVD/VHS tape player/recorder. It's especially useful for transfering VHS tapes to DVD. It works with NTSC tv signals or tapes that are Standard Definition (480i); it was made before HD TV and Blu-ray DVDs became common. So, it was specifically designed to record standard definiton 480i video, like that produced by your camcorder.
I bought mine in 2006.
I can confirm that it CAN pause and resume recording to DVD with no problems at all. I have a TV converter box that takes over-the-air HD TV signals and converts them to Standard Definition (480i) signals, which allows older non-HD TVs to watch the channels. I can also connect the output signal into my my DVD player/recorder to record shows to regular (non Blu-ray) DVDs in real-time. I can pause the burning during commercials and resume when the show starts again. I have never had any problem watching the recorded shows on any DVD player or my computer. And, of course, I can watch the show as it's being recorded.
