Clip goes black after splitting it Pro X6

Hi,
I am trying to split an avi file in the timeline. I split the clip at the required entry point (using the scissors). The 1st part is then marked with a yellow bar. As soon as I move the slider along to get to part where I want to split the clip again (the exit point) - the clip goes black and I can't see it. I if I click on "clip" the clip reappears - but if I click on "project" the section I am trying to cut out goes black again.

Can anyone help please?

But you can still clip it in Clip mode and see exactly where you want to clip. It doesn't have to be clipped only in Project mode -- even though by default it switches to Project.

What type of avi is it (there are over 800 formats which call themselves avi)? Right click the clip in the timeline and copy its Properties here, please. I ask since when I clip a file -- any format -- nothing goes dark in either clip or project mode.

Here are the clip properties. I don't seem to recall having this problem in the past.

I am trying to copy small parts of the video to add to the intro, but as I say, as soon as I make the first cut to the clip
with the scissors and then move the slider along to the point where I want to make the last cut, the whole of the remaining video is black. I have tried to cut a portion out and use the copy facility and this just produces a small black clip

I am a bit stumped.
