VS Pro X5 and Samsung MP4 problem

Post by Airone »

Hello all,

I use VideoStudio Pro X5 Ultimate 15.2.0.10 and I'm having now problems with MP4 video files from a Samsung Full HD Camcorder. Video resolution is 1080/50i, 1920x1080. Video clips are played perfectly by Windows Media Player, but in VS are played in spurts, with small jumps forward and back:

Even the generated video files have the same defect. How can I fix the problem?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums!

I was going to ask if that clip you posted was the original or the rendered, but I have now managed to download it and see that it is a much reduced mp4. Do you think you can post a short clip of the original video as well? That would certainly help us try to work out what might be going wrong.

Right now, the only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that you might try using SmartProxy in VS. That creates a standard def copy of the original. That should play smoothly and be easy to edit. Once the editing is complete, you then apply the edits back to the original.

Hello Ken,

thank you for reply. The clip I have posted was a rendered, but you can just download the original clip at this link:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/60c3ko
If I insert the clip on the video track and preview it, everything seems to work normally. But if I try to create a video file or edit the track (only needs a cut), happens what do you see on the rendered clip.
I have just activate SmartProxy (with default settings), but the problem remains.
I hope you can trace the problem through the original mp4 file.

Thank you.

That's strange. I keep a close eye on these forums throughout the day. I also answered several posts yesterday, but your latest ones never showed up till today, so I had no access to your original video. I now do.

It is even more strange, though. VS X6 shows an unusual frame rate of 12.5 frames per second Upper Field First, which would translate to 25 interleaved fields per second. GSpot, on the other hand, shows the vide to be 25 full frames per second i.e. 25p and not 25i. I suspect that is the cause of your problem in VS, but I don't know what to do about it.

I have tried rendering your file several ways. These included Same As First Clip (which produced a video, but also a 'File Format Mismatch' error). I tried several mpeg-4 outputs using both 50i and 50p; as well as AVCHD output using the same, as well as 25p. All produced the same erratic video you have found, including the first one (Same As). I also tried converting it to HDV, but the result was the same. So it looks as though VS simply can't handle video from your Samsung as it appears to be decoding the video incorrectly.

Curiously, though, I inserted your video into Sony Movie Studio 12, and it rendered perfectly to AVCHD using 50i. I also tried it in Cyberlink Power Director 11, and rendered it to mpeg-4, and again it rendered perfectly. So I am afraid I am even more mystified as to why it does not work in VS.

What is the exact model number of your Samsung? And did it come with any installation disk? I ask since it is possible there could be a Samsung version of the relevant codec which VS needs to access to be able to read the video correctly. (However, that does not explain why two other programs have no trouble reading it... )

Hello Ken,

happy to read you and thank you very much for testing my MP4 file. My camcorder is a Samsung HMX-H106SP (Full HD SSD) and I bought it two years ago. No installation disk come with it, I see camcorder like an hard disk on my Windows 7 desktop.

Normally I use camcorder with HD 720/50p resolution (without problems with VS), but recently a friend asked me to make a video at HD 1080/50i. Now I have about fifty clips to be edited, but I can not do it. I haven't other video editor, I always used VS and have always enjoyed it (until yesterday ).

I read that you have tested the mp4 file on VS 6 without success, so rule out that it may be an upgrade problem for VS 5. It 's really very strange that a lot of players and editing software (Windows Media Player, Cyberlink Power Director,Sony Movie Studio 12) have no problem to process this clip, but only VS does not recognize it. As a last resort, waiting to solve VS problem, I would try some software to convert my clips into another valid format, but I think that the problem will be to find a software that correctly recognizes my clips.

I look forward to your response and hope for a possible solution.
Thank you.

I also tested your clip -- though not as thoroughly -- with VS X5, with the same result. I also tried WMV HD format, with no luck.

As I say, I don't know why Media Studio and Cyberlink have no trouble encoding a new video from it. Movie Studio uses a Sony AVC codec, but I am not sure about what Cyberlink uses, though in the past they have had their own set of codecs. I think -- but am not totally sure -- that Video Studio uses MainConcept codecs.

The fact that software players like VLC or WMV have no trouble playing it as they are using decoders. The problem in VS appears to be with the encoder, not decoder.

You could always try a free video converter such as Handbrake, Freemake Video Converter or SUPER to convert it to another format.

Does the Samsung allow you to set 25p or 50p for 1920 x 1080 video?

EDIT: Ignore that last question. I have looked at the camera specifications, and see that it is only 1080i or 720p and 480p.

Hello Ken,

I tried converting the clips to another format, but there is a significant loss of quality (and time).
I have also received an offer from Corel to upgrade my VS to X6  , but I'm seriously thinking of buying another video editor because of the existing problem. The fact that it can not directly edit the 1080/50i video format causes me a great limitation especially now that these HD formats are spreading.
Have you contacts with the Corel technical service? Do you know a way to contact them? Do you think the problem we have highlighted can be solved in a short time?
I need to solve the problem as soon as possible, but I would not be forced to change software.

Thanks a lot.

Sorry, but I have no contact at all with Corel tech people. One of the reasons this Board exists is because of that!! They offer 90 days help for new users of a registered program, but after that you have to pay. And there is no tech help at all with trial programs. As I have already said, I tested your clip with X6, and I also did so briefly with X5 -- all with the same outcome. I have also said I have no idea why this problem exists. There may be others out there with the same, or similar, camcorder, though I can't recall anyone else reporting this exact problem. And I have established you certainly have one, and found other programs don't have the same problem.

So really, without offering any advice on what to do -- since this is a Corel board -- I can only wish you good luck!!
