Cannot reinstall VS5

Post by Brucewh »

When I Bought VS Pro Ultimate X6, I first uninstalled VS Pro Ultimate X5. Installation went fine, but I can't open the VSP that I have been working on for months. I've used File Save As over time as a version control system. Can't open any of the ones I've saved off in the last few months.

So, I decided to reinstall VS5, so that I could at least complete that project before starting new stuff with VS6. However, when I run the install and give it the serial numbers for VS5 and VS3 (which was the previous version), it thinks about it a minute and then pops up a dialog saying "invalid serial number." Now, I have both serial numbers right here in front of me, and I have checked and rechecked what I'm entering several times. I don't know which serial number it doesn't like, but I have the originals in hand. I used to have VS5 on this computer, so it used to like my serial numbers. Can anybody tell me how I can get past this roadblock and get VS5 reinstalled?

Well first of course X6 *should* open any .vsp files made in previous versions so there is something very odd there.

what error message do you get when you try to open one of those vsp files.

but your experience has re-inforced my long held view that users should NOT un-install a previous version until the new one is up and running satisfactorily and you can test every thing out.

however that being said I appreciate you do still have a problem - it is a long time since I installed an up-grade version - as far as I remember the first serial number the install asks for is the previous (in your case X3) serial number and it will not start to install until it is happy with that - then it asks for the serial number for the version you are installing (X5)

I don't get an error message when I try to open a VSP created using VS5. It goes through the process of loading all of the files, then hangs the program hard. As an unresponsive even when left to sit for more than 12 hours. Have to use Task Manager to forcibly kill it. One of the moderators here was kind enough to look at my VSP, and believes that the problem is either the text effects or transition effects that I applied in creating it. Frustrating in the extreme.

When installing VS5, a dialog box comes up asking for the serial number. Apparently the installer knows from the serial number that this is an upgrade, because the serial number dialogue box gets a second field where the serial number of the prior version is to be entered. With both serial numbers entered, one clicks "Next" (or "Continue" … I don't remember), and the "invalid serial number" error pops up. Presumably, it doesn't like the serial number of the previous version, since it didn't instantly hate the VS6 serial number. But, again, I have both serial numbers right here in front of me. I don't know what the problem is, but I would desperately like to know how I get past this roadblock.

Hi Bruce

View your Corel Account and product details, these should include the serial numbers of all registered versions.

Uninstall all versions………X6 X5 then X3

I assume VS X3 is the full version and not an upgrade.
If you install X3 first, when you install X5 it should not require X3 serial number as the installer will recognise the program as being installed, just provide X5 number.

Then install X6

Here is an older post relating to your VSP’s

http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 86#p267086

The post did dry up some what waiting for a reply from you. If you wish to reply to that post we could continue, after you have managed to re-install of course.

By the way is the X5 installation file you are using now the original file used as upgrade from X3
