Getting Color Bars across Photos

Post by TooLoose »

I am having a rather strange problem with PSP X14. I will describe my general workflow and where the problem occurs.

I do some editing to my photo and save it as a full size image. Next I resize it to a much smaller version for use online. I have no problems at all with these two steps. Next, I cancel the resized dimensions and resize it again to a file closer to the original size, after I sometimes sharpen it and add a canvas. Many of the thumbnails for this last step have horizontal color bars across the bottom of the thumbnail, ranging roughly from 1/16 to 1/3 of the image size. When I hit on it and open the file, the bar is not there. I tried opening this thumbnail in another photo editing program and when I have access to the thumbnails for opening, that bar is there on select images, and when I open the file, it's gone. Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to try printing it yet.

I've been following this basic formula for preparing and editing photos for a very long time and haven't had this problem until recently. And it's random, as not all images have this problem. I tried changing this process and reopening the full size file that has been edited and resize that one, but am getting the same random results. I have no problems with the thumbnails for the full size and the first reduced size images.

I have been a long time user of PSP...since v.7 and upgrade versions regularly.

I'm running Windows 7 premium, 64-bit on a laptop with an Intel i-7 processor.

What could be causing this?

Thanks.

Really quick, where are you viewing these thumbnails? Since the problem isn't with the image it's with the thumbnail I am assuming its the thumbnail cache that's the problem.

PSP has its own thumbnail cache. And Windows has its own thumbnail cache.

If you're viewing the thumbnail inside PSP's Manage mode or Organizer palette then this would be the PSP thumbnail cache.

If you're seeing it in the Windows File Explorer then it's probably the Windows Cache.

To clear the Windows Cache: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10 ... reset.html

To clear the PSP Cache: type "C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Corel PaintShop Pro\14.0\" into the address bar in the Windows File Explorer. You should see 3 folders 'Cache' 'Database' and 'Thumbs.'

Open the Thumbs folder and delete the contents inside. PSP will be a little slow on loading the text time as it re-populates this folder but hopefully it's a fluke and you won't be experiencing that issue.

I did as you suggested and that did not fix the problem, cleared the thumbnail cache (or whatever you call it.)

I will edit a pic in Adobe Elements and see if it reacts the same way, and also I'll try printing one and see if the color bar shows up on the print.

Definitely Something Askew with PSP

I've noticed something new with my problem here and wonder if anybody has documented a bug in PSP X4. Besides the problem described above, I've noticed recently that when I go to "Save As" the thumbnail illustrated in the save box is not the one I am saving, though the title is listed correctly.

I am using this on a new computer, just a few months old, an Intel 64-bit i7 processor.

Any help on this?

Some details missing in your description. What mode are you doing this editing in. Is it happening in Edit, Manage or Adjust mode?
Are these the steps that you are doing:

1. Edit (make changes to an image (what size is it - pixel dimensions) and saving that image.
2. Resizing to websize (smaller- how much smaller - pixel dimensions?) and then (saving that with a different name in the same folder? same name different folder?)
3. Cancelling the resized dimensions? Does this mean you are using the blue Undo arrow up under the undo menu bar to bring the image back to its original size, or that you are (with small image on workspace that you just saved) doing a resize where you change the pixel dimensions back up to near the original size (upsampling)?
4. This near full size image is then (sometimes) sharpened (Do you mean Sharpen? or apply Unsharp mask? Is this the first and only sharpening you have done or did you also sharpen it after sizing down to web size and before saving it?)
5. Add a canvas - Are you using (from Edit mode) Image > Canvas Size and then typing in dimensions a bit larger than your image and clicking the centre button in the Placement grid -- in essence placing a border around it?
6. Resave this last image. (Again how do you do the saves - same folder different name , different folder? Also what compression are you using with your saving (presuming you are saving as a jpeg).

So much information not said, or assumed, but each does things in different ways.

Now "many of the thumbnails ... have horizontal color bars" - Is this when viewing large icons in a Windows 7 folder, viewing in the Organiser, or switching to Adjust or Manage modes and viewing the thumbnails there.
Does it happen with both landscape and portrait orientation images?
You said "sometimes sharpen" does it happen with only those images you sharpen, or those you don't sharpen or does not seem to matter.
What about the "Editing" . Does it depend on the type of editing you do or not?
Before others can help you or even consider it to be a bug, it must be repeatable for you and for others (like the extra space after text bug)
Time to do some detective work and work out a series of steps that consistently give you these bars.
