Hope I'm doing this right as I'm a newbie to forums and relatively new to film editing.
Just upgraded to Corel Video Studio X6 (from X5) but have a recurring problem when playing (back) clips: stuttery/ out of sync with sound.
However, no problem playing the same clips through VLC, Quicktime or Media Player for example.
Have enabled Smart Proxy but this does not seem to help.
FILM CLIPS FILMED ON (NEW) NIKON 5100
1280 x 720/ 25fps/ MOV
Data rate: 10395kbps/ Total bitrate: 11932kbps
PROJECT SETTINGS:
PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo
I suspect I may have overlooked a setting?!
Any help appreciated.
And thanks ;o)

Re: Stuttery playback
Hi David
Welcome to the forums.
First the project properties should indicate 16:9 not 4:3 and that is probibaly the only setting you need to worry about.
Widescreen 16:9 should be selected as default so you must have changed that option. Go to Settings and make sure Enable Widescreen 16:9, your video will then fill the screen. Your video is 1280 x 720 which is widescreen 16:9.
Your video files are QuickTime Mov types, Right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they, you can take a screen shot of the window, create an image and attach to your post.
Smart Proxy files should be automatically created as your frame size is large, view detail from Settings-Smart Proxy settings.
The files do take some time to create and do help in editing and playback, make sure proxy files have been created Settings Smart Proxy Manager, should show a list having similar names to original.
When you playback you have the option of Clip or Project mode, using smart proxy project playback should be smoother.
What are you intending to create, a DVD or video for the internet.
Finally did you have the same stuttering issues using X5?

Re: Stuttery playback
Hi Trevor
Thanks for replying to my post. Checked off everything you suggested and I'm clearly I'm going in the right direction but then the strangest thing happened:
I made my first short film 18 months ago with a JVC camcorder using MPEG format. Out of curiosity, I converted two files my current 'problem' MOV footage to MPEG and guess what: NO stuttering! I didn't even have to create a Smart proxy file.
Don't really understand why but it seems to work. I've converted several files now with the same positive results. Curious to know whether there might be an issue with MOV files and Corel Video Studio so will email Corel about this shortly. BTW: Before I posted I contacted Coral support but frankly I did not find them helpful preferring instead to put me through a repetitive tick box process. I appreciate they need to establish the parameters of a problem but it email ping-pong was getting tedious which is why I joined this forum.
kind regards

Re: Stuttery playback
Hi
Unfortunately there are thousands of video formats out there with camera manufacturers either creating their own or tweaking existing codecs , AVI has about 800 variations. this leaves video editors playing catch-up.
I know that Mov H264 for example cannot be created by Video Studio yet many cameras use that combination.
So some video types may require converting to a more editable format, a third party converter may be required.
Video Studio does have the Batch Convert option that may help especially as you have successfully used VS to convert the Mov, and assuming intending on burning a DVD Mpeg 2 would be the correct format.
Mov files, as a workround some can have the extension changed to MP4 which has improved editing and playback, afraid that’s just trial and error.
Converting to MP4 for internet use may also improve things
Corel support,
cannot help there I am afraid, many poor reports about them especially the cost incurred after the 90 day free period.

Re: Stuttery playback
HI Jo_David:
I also have a Nikon that creates 'problem' MOV files and have been experimenting with conversion to friendlier formats for use in VS. I'd like to try your MPEG conversion. If you have time, can you tell me your conversion settings and compression codec, and if you used VS or a standalone converter? Thanks.
Tommy
