Smart Proxy causes "skips"

Post by sealilly »

When I ingest tape, I always turn off as many resources as possible, internet, virus, etc. When capturing with videostudio pro x5, if i select smart proxy prior to capture, i get skips that appear like dropped frames. If i turn off smart proxy, then capture, than start smart proxy queue, all is fine. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forums.

First off, I don't think SmartProxy was designed to work during capture. I suspect what could be happening is that while capturing, it is trying to convert the incoming video into proxy files at the same time, using some of the resources normally devoted to the capture and thus causing the apparent dropping of frames.

That being said, what sort of video are you capturing?

Hi

As far as I know Smart Proxy is initiated after clips are inserted to the timeline, so the first capture should not have smart proxy creating files, however if Smart Proxy is already creating files and you start a capture then you may be straining the CPU especially if you are converting the video during capture, say from an analogue source via a capture card.

Thanks guys, I am capturing AVCHD from direct from Sony FX1000, and I agree, but am just surprised the software "allows" smart proxy file creation during capture. No biggie, just means I always have to uncheck in settings prior to capturing. I use lots of NLE programs and ALWAYS come back to VS for 2 HUGE reasons, the thumbwheel and the smart proxy! I also learned today that if I move the folder of my "working" files, I lose the smart proxy file, I will simply create them again....

Hi

I understand what you mean and what is going on.
Are you sure you actually require Smart Proxy for those file types. Some users don’t bother with Smart Proxy, Yep its set by default but have you tried editing without SP files.
Do you have playback problems?
