Cannot Burn Disk in Dolby 5.1 X6 Ultimate or X4 Pro!

Post by mark9422 »

I recently purchased VS X6 Ultimate. I had been using X4 Pro. I chose the full install not the upgrade version of the software.

While using X4 for a while, the program would not burn a BluRay or AVCHD disk in Dolby 5.1 no matter what settings I chose. It would only burn in "Stereo". VS X4 DID burn these disks in Dolby 5.1 for a long time then it just stopped. I always selected Dolby 5.1 from tools or settings menu at the top of the program (I forget which one as I am not at the computer I use for VS). Also when burning my disk I select Dolby Digital 3/2 and 448kps.
When the disk was played back in my BluRay player, it only showed two channel stereo.

Then I upgraded to X6 Ultimate and the same thing happens! Yesterday I burned a short 16 min video consisting of mostly still photos, some HD video, and music tracks and transitions. I made all the "correct" selections to produce in Dolby 5.1 and the disk, when played in my BluRay player is again in Stereo. I have tried other disks to ensure my BluRAy player and home entertainment system is not faulty. The system readily shows Dolby 5.1 and 7.1 for studio produced disks.

-----> Strange thing is when burning a standard DVD, it burns in 5.1!<-----

What am I missing? This is really frustrating.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Was the audio of the video you were burning already 5.1?

I don't have any immediate answer, I'm sorry -- though I seem to recall at least one other thread from several months ago which reported a similar occurrence. IIRC the response given was that two channel Dolby cannot be automatically converted into 5.1 but requires some intervention in the sound mixer during editing. I have never tried this, personally, so cannot help. But hopefully someone else might have some ideas.

The kicker, of course, is that you say you got 5.1 when burning a standard DVD. Was this using exactly the same footage?

EDIT: negating my first comment above, I have just used an AVCHD clip with dual channel AAC audio in X6 and output to Share > Create Video File > Custom, and set Blu-Ray mpeg-2 transport stream as the format, with 3.2 Dolby set as the audio. Rendering was quick, and the new file has properties which include Dolby 5.1 audio.

So can we assume you tried this Custom approach? I know you say you set 3.2 but you did not mention the Custom output option.

Hi Ken

Funny...I was the author of the thread a few months ago! Never did find a solution but thought that the upgrade to X6 Ultimate would solve the problem.
It didn't.
As far as the custom settings--->it seems you made a video file and not a disk...correct? I have not tried that.

Yes, I just made a file. But if you have such a file from your project, and it uses 5.1 Dolby, then insert that file in the burning module -- and make sure "Do not convert compliant MPEG Files" is ticked in the Options icon there -- then it should burn a disc which uses 5.1, since no rendering should take place during the burning process (apart from converting any menu you might make).

You could always test this by burning a Blu-Ray Folder instead of an actual disc...

Just an observation, when you hit the burn button the process bars should start with Convert Menu ( AS Ken said “no rendering should take place”)
If you see Convert Title then the video files are being converted, not what you want as the audio may revert to Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)
Try using a short video sample.
The video file is saved here BDMV\STREAM as m2ts, insert the file to Video Studio and view its properties.

OK. Thanks. I will try your suggestion too but I'm not sure why I can't simply burn a disk with 5.1 Dolby.
I will report back

Hi

Well you should be able to burn a disc using 5.1 Digital Dolby.

You either create a compliant Bluray video file using 5.1 and use that to burn the disc or if you are using the project file you set the “Mpeg Properties for file Conversion” to use 5.1, then the render process will create a suitable file prior to burning the disc.

I have run through this process to create a Bluray Folder and the resulting video file uses 5.1.

I would have thought that your original recordings should be using 5.1 Digital Audio

Thanks guys your suggestion worked!
Here's what I did:

Share > Create DISK >AVCHD>Create AVCHD Folders (or files)>Uncheck "Do not convert compliant MPEG files">Dolby 3/2

Took the created file (AVCHD -Stream) and inserted into a new project.

Share>Create Disk>AVCHD>CHECKED "Do Not Convert Compliant MPEG Files">Made sure encoding was Dolby 3/2.

Perfect quality too both audio (Dolby 5.1) and video (AVCHD 1920x1080) :D

Thanks for helping with the work-around. Still not sure why I couldn't just go directly to disk but I'm glad I found a way to achieve what I originally wanted. Maybe it's a setting on my computer. (?)

Thanks again!

Well I am happy you have found a work-around that works for you. But I have to say I am rather surprised by it. If you followed my suggestion above and rendered to a file using 5.1 (3/2) audio, then inserted that in the burning module, and kept the 'Do not convert' box ticked, then you would be producing either a disc or a Blu-Ray folder which also contains 5.1 audio, straight off. Lata also indicated that he had successfully done so.

Instead, you seem to be taking a long way roundf -- first by apparently inserting your project file into the burning module, unticking the 'do not convert' box, and then changing the burning properties to include 5.1 audio. Yes, that will work as it obviously has for you.

But why on earth are you then doing the same thing all over again if you already have a Blu-Ray folder with 5.1 audio. If you are satisfied the first operation worked, then you can burn an actual disc; or else use the successful Blu-Ray folder and burn it using a third party program to a disc.

Hi

I also recommended creating the 5.1 version prior to burning the disc.
By un-checking the “do not Convert….” you are forcing a conversion that may not be unnecessary.

However if the compliant file uses DD 2.0 then you would indeed force that conversion to 5.1

Much easier to create the file first.

Not sure I understand this comment :-

“Took the created file (AVCHD -Stream) and inserted into a new project.”

A little confused, so just to clarify…….

You should start a new project, nothing in the timeline, Share Create Disc
When the burner module opens you now insert your video files.
Top left icon—Insert Media Files-Insert Video.

If you add a video to the project timeline then Share Create disc you are effectively inserting a project VSP to the burner module, that will require converting.

Got it. I see the extra steps I took that were not needed. I guess I didn't follow it exactly at first but now do.
To clarify my comment:

“Took the created file (AVCHD -Stream) and inserted into a new project.”.....

After rendering AVCHD folders from the original project, I selected the rendered file from AVCHD folder--->Stream and inserted into a new time line and created a disk making sure to check "Do Not Convert Compliant MPEG Files".

I now realize I didn't need to put it into a new time line and just go to the burning module.

Last question and I'll put this to rest just to see if I have been working this correctly:

If I want to burn a disk without the "work-around" steps we discussed here----

When I am ready to burn the disk from the original project time line and want to burn in 5.1, do I check or uncheck "Do Not Convert Compliant MPEG Files" assuming my original audio is two channel stereo?

Thanks again! Sometimes I miss the "forest through the trees" :D
