overlays - split screens

Post by WimDC »

I know from the author that the youtube clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6ZxNvtW ... HjDYxFD4aU) is made with Pinnacle Studio.

I would like to know if Corel Videostudio also has the possibility to combine several overlays like those starting at 1:55 and 2:41 and 3:38 and 3:47 and 4:28 and 5:01 and 5:24 and ? And how to do this?

(I'm using VS12, but if this is possible in a newer version I will upgrade).

It is a long time since I was familiar with VS12 but from memory I would think that is all possible with a little bit of thought - I could certainly do it all very easily in X6.

Hi

Yes I would think Video Studio is capable of creating those effects.
You would use multiple Overlay tracks, one for each video clip.
I am not sure if the Picture in Picture filter is provided with X2, don’t have that version installed. But P-in P would be useful.

There should also be a Cropping filter again may be useful.

Some effects look as though they have used a transparent frame, some time ago I created a similar effect

Downloading the trial version X6 would be the best option, can you update your profile to include your PC specification which will then show to the right of your posts, Thanks

Hope this helps

I have knocked up a quick demonstration video using version X6 which shows some of the techniques you are interested in

I did it using some odd clips that were on my PC and it only lasts about 48 seconds but I think it should show you what you can do.

you can watch the video here :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geEUBldWKuM

Hi BrianCee,

what you made in 48 seconds is really fantastic.
I'll soon download the trialversion to try it myself.

Can you just give me some hints where and how to start?

Thanks again for your help !

yes - first let me say this is not necessarily the correct, only or most efficient way of doing it - when you asked the question it was just the first idea that came to me.

I first made a mask with three transparent windows in it - the mask is contained in the zip file below - download and unzip it for use - it goes in the overlay tracks and has to be set to "fit to screen".

the image below that shows the complete timeline for that video - have a look at it - it also involve the cropping filter and some masking - you will have many questions but I'll walk you through them as they arise. we are both relatively close timewise so it's not like you are 12 hours adrift from me so possibly not to much time wasting waiting for the world to rotate.

I have revisited this project as it seemed to me when looking at the timeline image above that I may have got carried away in using the overlay mask to often - so I have re-arranged things and as you can now see the mask is only in one overlay track - it all works exactly the same as before - but now looks like this :-

Hi Brian,

Nice mask. Thanks for making it available. Newbie question: How did you make the video frames show for the clips in the timeline, instead of just a single colored line with one image at the beginning?

Thanks,

Tommy

Hi Ken,

Thanks! I previously looked at that page but completely missed that option somehow.

@Brian
Could you smart-package that triple-window project and add it to this post.
I am unable to really understand what you did [especially with all the vertical dotted lines] on the screen-shot.
Thanks, Jim

If you mean the little vertical dotted lines between each frame that is just the way version X6 separated frames it has nothing to do with the way the project works - I have updated the project to X7 and a screen shot from that is attached - if you click on the image it will change to full screen so you can see it better.

I have made a smart package of the project - but even zipped it is far to big to attach here - I'll try shortly to upload it to a cloud and see if you can download from there.

If all has worked as expected Jim you should have received an email with an invitation to download the package from my one drive.

Brian.
I got your project from the cloud and opened in x8 which I purchased on 02/28 as a pre-sale offer.
[having significant install problems and level 2 support [Inocencio] is little help ... I'll post a help-request shortly to the VS forum.

From your above x7 screen shot, I see that the dotted lines at 3.0 sec no longer show.
In my email reply - I've asked if those "markers" help in any way to position clips.

Also - when I imported your project into x8, the MASK still shows once in the timeline, not as individual 3.0 sec masks per your x7 screen shot.
Is that a "setting" checkbox?

Everything worked just great using the smart package and I've learned quite a lot from digging into how you did the CROP feature.

Thanks so very much.

Those dotted lines you are worrying about are just the way the image displays in X6 - they are not part of the project - I did not put them there - they do not impact on the way the project works - they have no relevance at all - look at my X7 screen shot just above here posted on March 4th 2015 - no dotted lines that is how yours looks - they are purely the way the screen looked when I did the original in X6 - they serve no purpose - they do nothing

The mask is one continuous file - it is in both screen shots you refer to.

The only difference I see between my screen and yours is that you are viewing "Thumbnail and file name" - while I prefer "Thumbnail only"

look - no dotted lines in X7 (or X8)
