Layer when adding Shapes Issue

Hey Guys,

Today, as I was fiddling around with PSPX5, I noticed that every time you create a rectangle/ellipse/pen tool lines/etc, a new layer is created.
Can I modify the current layer without having a new layer added?

The black line can be done by upping the stroke and making sure the foreground color is black.

Then on the vector layer itself change the blend mode. See if that blends with the background to get the effect you want.
