Using VideoStudio 8 I'm getting errors when I try to insert an audio file from any music CD. I was able to do this successfully yesterday and all of a sudden I can't - with the same project and the same music CDs!.
The error message is "An error occurred when opening the WAV file"
The sequence that led up to this is the following:
1) I had completed my project (video, audio, titles, etc) and was fine tuning the volume of the music track when Video Studio 8 crashed (hung, displayed Microsoft error, then exited without saving).
2) I reinvoked Video Studio 8 and reloaded my project. All of the links to the music files were broken and I couldn't figure out how to relink them.
3) I deleted all of the audio clips from the music track in the project -- there are now "no" music clips in the project.
4) I attempted to re-insert the audio clips back into the music track (right clicking in Music track, selecting to insert audio to music track, selecting a music file from the CD in my F:\ drive. I did this *exactly* as I had the first time when it did work.
5) A message box pops up saying the music file is being pre-processed, then I get the error message "An error occurred when opening the WAV file".
6) If I use the Audio "Music & Voice" pane to attempt to record the music to the track, the pane recognizes the CD and it's contents and will play the music, but I then get an error "Can't record the CD. 15131:0:2"
How do I fix this? Anyone know what happened to break it?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Help! Can't insert audio files - Video Studio 8

This kind of event is disheartening to anyone. Here's what I would do:
Be sure you have a good "saved" project running and have just reopened VS8.
Put the CD into its tray and let it start, but cancel any action.
Set the Library to "Audio" (or any subfolder under "Audio" you might have created using the Library Manager).
Click the little folder icon to the right of Library and import the CD track you want into the Library.
Then drag it to the place on the Timeline that you need it.
Alternatively, you could import the CD music into your computer using an audio editing program like Audacity, which is free. Then you'd have .WAV files you could play, etc. Or, you could rip the CD and end up with .mp3 files. In any case you could then use the "import" folder icon to bring them into the Library.
I've just been doing all these things in my own project. Good luck!

I'm not sure if this caused the problem but there is a chance. Depending on how old your music CD is, newer CDs have a code built into them that place a a line or two into your registry that prevents copying. This happens when your PC's CD player is set to Autorun. When your player autoruns, it introduces the code and you can not make a copy. As I said, this might or might not be the problem. There is a possibility that when you first inserted the music tracks, VS circumvented this but after the crash it caught you. Sorry but I do not have the search for finding the code placed in the registry but try a search in Google.
Good luck,
Erock

Thank you for information
Keith and Erock,
Thank you for your replies. I ended up upgrading to VideoStudio 9 which fixed the problem (don't know how, though). That was after I reinstalled VS 8 and still encountered the problem inserting the audio files. I didn't receive your replies until after I upgraded to VS 9, so I don't know if Keith's suggestion would have fixed the problem, but it sounds likely. I wasn't aware of that method of inserting audio files via the Library.
Thank you again for your info,
Tracy
