Computer Freeze?

Post by db1433 »

My problem is a strange one. I downloaded the program, Video Studio Pro 5
and started using it once. I saved my work; close the program, did some emailing and other computer work, and returned to the program about 2 hours later. The machine was not re-booted or taken off-line at any part of this time. I run Windows XP SP/3. I have 1 gig of ram and my hard drive is only half full so I have plenty of room. I primarily work from a Seagate 1 Tetra Byte external hard drive as storage for my video work.

When I re-opened the program I tried to load it and start another film project and was immediately locked out or frozen inside the program. The computer would not respond to anything I tried, no mouse, and no nothing. Control, ALT, DELETE AND a re-start, the computer was fine. Started the program back up and it loaded right away and then stopped me from doing anything. This went on for three hours and I tried the next day with the same result. I understand that this is a trial version but I also understand that it is only a trial until I purchase it. After I tried everything I could think of I removed the program.

I am not a new Editor user, I have been working with DVD production for a number of years. In fact, I believe one of the moderators here, Mr. Ken Berry help me out numerous times with my now old program from Ulead Video Studio plus when I first got started with Video editing. Reading back over the requirements for Video Pro 5, I realize now that I should have another gig of ram but since this computer is an old one and only does Video work, I thought I could get away with using it but maybe not! The setup here is with 1 gig of ram and a 1.60gigahertz AMD Athlon processor. This is running a Windows XP SP3 Emachine. The hard drive has about 150 Gigabytes of free space so there is plenty of room.

How big is the file you are trying to load, with only 1GB of ram, there is nothing left for VS to use,so when you try to load your project, VS does not have the required resources available to load, so as it tries to use all available ram, your computer will lock up, to run properly you really need 4GB of ram.

Bill, if those specs you posted are correct then your system is just not good enough to run the program. Below are the requirements.

Minimum System Requirements

Microsoft Windows 8, Microsoft Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP with latest service packs installed (32-bit or 64-bit editions)
Intel Core Duo 1.83 GHz, AMD Dual-Core 2.0 GHz (multi-core processor recommended)
2 GB RAM (4 GB or higher recommended)
128 MB VGA VRAM or higher (1 GB or higher recommended)
4 GB of free hard drive space
1024x768 screen resolution with 16-bit color display
DirectX 9 or higher compatible audio card with latest driver
Windows-compatible DVD-ROM drive for installation
Recordable Blu-ray™ drive required for creating Blu-ray discs
Internet connection required for online features and tutorial videos
Internet connection may be required to verify the serial number during installation

Thank you, RobertOZ & Canuck. Unfortunately for me I’m afraid that Canuck is right. I did not read the download information all the way through. But I did learn that I don’t need as many programs as I had, opened either. Closing stuff off greatly increased available Ram as well as CPU resources. Now the program may not run as fast as it should but I’m retired now and in no hurry! <g>

I have a laptop with 4 gigs of ram in the wings that is running Windows 8 if needed. A new desktop is still in the wind here for a family computer. This old one will be for Video only and if I can, will try and sneak more Ram in if necessary. Being off line permanently and only doing video work will be much easier all the way around.

Thank you both for responding. I tried to list being notified of responses in my profile but something must be messed up because I only found your postings by returning here to the board and checking. Thanks again for your time.
