Open Font extras

Post by Cassel »

Some open fonts have extras for some characters and all. How are those accessible in PSP? I found a tutorial for Photoshop but i cannot see where, in PSP, those features can be accessed. Here is the video: https://vimeo.com/46122917

Any way to get those fun extras from Open Fonts when they have them?

I don't think they can be accessed through PSP. You need a character map program (there's on in Windows) to find the keystrokes for those particular characters. You then press the proper keystroke when typing your text in PSP to get those characters.

So, someone using the Open Font in PSP cannot use those extras at all or they need a convoluted way to use them?

To get the copyright symbol PSP recognises (c) anc converst that. To get other symbols it does not recognise even though they are part of the font, I would use a word processor to type out the most common symbols and save that as an easily opened file, and then copy and paste to the document in PSP.

That's always been the case with any extra characters that are included with a font and for all versions of PSP. If they are assigned to a letter or number key, you just need to know which one to type. But, if they're assigned to any keys other than standard punctuation keys, you need to use a character map program to find the keystrokes. For those you usually need to hold down the Alt key while typing the number code on the keypad. For example, you'd need to do that to type a tilde or other foreign language characters.

To get this: ã, I need to hold down the Alt key and type in "0227". When I release the keys, the character appears in PSP's text box.

I am not specifically talking about characters that are just not on a keyboard, but in that video, there is the option to have a "long tail" to some letters or not, some fancy CAPS or not, some loops on letters like l, k, h, b, f and such, or have a straight simple "stick" on top instead, or have a particular kind of detail when two particular letters are adjacent. I had never seen those until i watched the video and those Open Fonts look fantastic and fancy.

You are right. I tried to play with it. And it does not work as expected. Similar video I have seen few years ago, so I already done some testing but as I realize Adobe Illustrator (Indesign) can do this only ...as I know.

I installed Scribus [http://www.filehippo.com/download_scribus/] but it can use only single ligatures (pairs) like - fi, ff, ... [http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/scr ... cking-text].
