Out of space-now I know why!
Hi everyone
I have captured just over 2 hours of VHS using DV type 1. The overall size of the capture is 26.5G although they are broken down into 7 smaller files due to the 4GB file size limitation. (Win ME)
Problem is that the drive usage indicator tells me that I have used 52Gb with only 24 GB remaining. (I have 80Gb second hard drive just for video editing) When you view the contents of the drive there is nothing other than the capture files and at the bottom of the screen is the confirmation that there are 7 objects with a total size of 26.5Gb!
I have tried disk clean up,emptied the recycle bin and checked the My Docs/UleadVS8/Favourites folder- this is empty.
Are there any residual files secreted away elsewhere?
Your advice would be much appreciated.
I tried to capture a similar movie and got the "out of disk space" warning towards the end. Hence the message title.
Many thanks

Hi
I have read a few of your recent postings and all appear to point to insufficient disc space.
I do not use Me but Win 2000, this has Norton installed which in addition to the recycle bin protects additional files. These can be quite large, but as far as I am aware are deleted periodically.
Within Video Studio
Have you checked the preview files manager from Tools / preview manager files
File / preferences / preview
Check the location of your working folders
If vs 9 the working folder for the share / burning module is different from the edit working folder.
All the best

Thanks but I should have ample space
Hi Trevor
I hve 80Gb second hard drive. I have always been able to capture 2 movies and create the necessary project, video and TS folders without any hassle.
How does the Win ME factor kick in when we are talking about plenty of disk space?
This is just silly, but I will continue to investigate.
Thanks

Your using WinME then using FAT32 .
Correct me on this but isn't there a Limitation on the partition size for FAT32?
I thought the biggest FAT32 partition can only be 32GigaBytes.
How can you use a complete 80gig drive as FAT32(one drive)?
When you partitiioned the drive windows should have forced you create
more partiitions(drives).

Nope, FAT32 can handle much larger drives than that, but it requires large cluster sizes that are very inefficient for small files.
I think the discrepancy might be the result of file fragmentation. If a single byte is written to a sector, an entire cluster (a collection of sectors) must be allocated, so writing a small amount of data to disk might consume 8KB, 16KB, 32KB, or even more disk capacity. NTFS is much more efficient in using the available disk capacity.
Also, if you press Control-A to select all objects in the current Explorer window, it will display a message if there are any hidden objects that aren't shown, and which aren't being selected as a result. That's one quick way to find out if there is something else there that is taking up space.
You can also try the Disk Cleanup Tool, or manually clean up the Windows TEMP folder, as well as the Internet Explorer Cache.

Thanks for all your advice
But I still dont get it.
Never had this probelm before.
How do you find the hidden recycle folder, if one exists?

Like many others, I use an external Firewire hard drive exclusively for video editing. Probably like many others, I periodically have the disc clam up and give me a 'Write to ...' error, which I get around by simply rebooting the disc. But also, to lengthen the time between such errors, I do a complete re-format of the drive. Now, I don't know if your drive is external or internal, but if indeed you do just use it for video, then whenever you are between projects and don't want to retain any files on the drive, I would suggest a complete reformat. That will also get rid of any hidden files which might be clogging it up, all unknown to you...

Ken, you should probably take a look at this page:

If you capture 26 GB of video onto your harddisk and want to do anything with it, you need to set aside the same space again for your temp files. That makes it 52 GB. Before you capture another video, I would recommend to finish this one and to clean it off your system. Another aproach would be to get another disk.

That depends on what you do.
If you take those two hours of DV, do some editing on it such as multitrimming, adding titles, a transition or two, and then render to an MPEG2 file in order to produce a single-layer DVD, you'll need less than 5GB to do that. In fact, tonyjer has been keeping the bitrate fairly low to keep files below 4GB due to FAT32 limitations. Obviously you need more disk space once you take that MPEG2 file to actually burn the disk, but the requirements aren't anywhere near the 50+ GB you mentioned.

Re: Out of space-now I know why!
IMHO, if he tries to work with the captured files, 26 GB plus, his program will allocate the same space for the temp files. after he is finished with it, sure, the file size will be smaller. I don't claim to be the expert on this though, it just makes sense in the context.tonyjer wrote:Hi everyone

Before he can capture the next video, he still has to get rid of the old capture files to free up space
