I have had PaintShop Pro X4 for a while now and recently (around December 2012) the program wouldn't even open. It kept freezing up and I had to close it with task manager, so I uninstalled and reinstalled PSPX4. Then it started hanging/freezing every time I try to open or save a file (all types) or copy and paste when editing, and when I select certain tools such as paint brush or text. About 50% of the time I have to close the program with task manager, the rest of the time I have to wait until X4 decides it wants to work so I can get stuff done. Is anyone else having this problem and is there a way to fix this? Will upgrading to X5 fix this problem? I noticed it started after I installed a PSP update, which I think might have been SP3. I have no image files in my documents so it does not load but only 1 picture on start up.
I currently have version 14.3.0.3 and there are no updates available.
I would greatly appreciate any help.

Re: PaintShop Pro X4 hangs/freezes
I have a friend with Vista that runs X4 with no problems. He only uses it in Edit mode however. The manage mode has been known to have some problems with cataloging from reading other posts.
The first time you get it operating try changing the default operating mode to Edit and turn off the cataloging.
You say it was operating for a while before the problem. So you need to try and determine what has changed / caused the problem.
Because you have reinstalled the program with the same results it suggests that something outside the program (corrupt database, bad files..) is causing a problem.
Is the program a CD version or a download. I would also try the program on another computer just to verify that you do not have a bad download / corrupted CD.

Re: PaintShop Pro X4 hangs/freezes
I will try that, but I don't see how that is going to help the hanging and freezing when I manually open a file in PSPX4 or when tying to edit the picture. I purchased it online so I have the download. I do not save the file to my computer, I log into my corel account and get a new download each time. My mother has it on her computer, I will have to play around with it and see if it does that same thing. Nothing has changed with my computer (programs and such), so I know it is NOT my computer. The program worked beautifully until corel installed on of their updates.

How do you turn off cataloging? I have tried to find a way and as far as I can tell that option does not exist.

Re: PaintShop Pro X4 hangs/freezes
I don't think that unticking that actually disables cataloging. It just changes WHEN PSP does it. Normally it will catalog your files when you load the program. Ticking the box tells it to wait and do that after you shut PSP down. Here's the blurb from the Help file:hartpaul wrote:File > Preferences >General Program Preferences Manage and untick all the boxes. Also on Default Work Space set Edit
To stop the cataloging, I think you have to add your folders to the exclusion list.In the Thumbnail images group box, mark the Allow cataloging to complete after exiting the application check box. When enabled, this option speeds up the display of thumbnails when you next start the application.
Using Paint Shop Pro versions 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 16

Re: PaintShop Pro X4 hangs/freezes
Alright, I did uncheck the "cataloging after exiting the program" and I excluded all the file types, the only thing I did not do was the folders. Even with all that though it did not help. I think I am going to try to uninstall and reinstall it without doing the corel update. I am pretty sure all this started when corel updated to the service pack 3. Thank you everyone for your help.

Re: PaintShop Pro X4 hangs/freezes
I got it working properly. I uninstalled and reinstalled PSPX4 (went from 14.3.0.3 to 14.2.0.1), I also stopped cataloging as well because I never use it anyway. It had to be the service pack 3, so I will just not do anymore updates. Thanks for the advice.
