PC cant read MF4 DVDs

Post by jvandroo »

I created movie DVDs with MF4 on one PC that can read it.
Also APPLE can read it. DVD players can read it too.
Any other PCs or laptops dont recognize and cannot read my DVD.
What can be done about this? Is there a ULEAD patch available to
correct this bug?
Thanks.

Do the other PCs have DVD-ROMs? Do they have DVD playing software? Will they play other movie discs?

...Of course they do!
PowerDVD and the Microsoft software cant read it.
It just reacts as if there was no DVD inserted.
Power DVD says 'no disk in drive'
Mac plays it without problems.
Would there be some CODECS missing?
Maybe some ULEAD patches are resolving this problem.
I will try it, but this is very strange.
Thank you!

How can a ULEAD patch solve defficiencies on the other PC's? If some players and PC's play your disk and others don't, the problem, to me, lies with those devices that don't, not with the program that created the disk.

I dont know? I can understand that one PC can be deficient, maybe two,
but not five different PC's. There was already a topic about this problem.
I am checking it out.

How come other PC's and stand alone DVD players can play it? Are they just smarter than the other 5 PC's? I don't know. PC's come in a lot more flavours than DVD players. If a DVD player can play any DVD, that does not mean that any one out there will play it. That cannot be ULEAD's problem though.

An idea: What format are the discs in? What format of disc do the drives you are having problems with recognize? That could explain why they can play regular movie DVDs but not the discs you burned.

Heinz-oz, of course its possible for a dvd to play differently in different devices depending on the software that created it! I have purchased DVDs where the menu system won't work in one of my stand alone dvd players but works fine in the other.

It could be a bug in the way MF4 creates the menus, or something completely different. Are the DVD's + or - ? Maybe the players don't like a certain type of disk.

Yes, we might have to look in that direction.
In the meantime I made some experiments with 3 computers:
1-PC with MF4 loaded and(Pionner driver), 2-PC normal(Matshita driver), 3-E-Machine laptop(Toshiba driver), all using only DVD-R.

Making DVD to DVD copy with MF3: all computers read it, except sometimes PC-2 that says UNSUPPORTED FORMAT.
Making video-DVD with MF3 results in the same conclusion.
NOW: copy DVD to DVD or making a video DVD with MF4 results that
only PC-1 can read it. The other machines tell me UNSUPPORTED FORMAT or NO DISK IN DRIVE.
the MAC laptop reads everything and stand alone DVD players also but
with some little differences as we all know.
I am using only the normal DVD-R.
I wrote to ULEAD about this and I am waiting for an answer.
Anyway, thanks a lot for your answers.

If it's format:

I have reports lately that iMac and some new Dell models have drives that can only read/burn DVD+R format.

There are some internet discussions that this is firmware issue: i.e. the drive is capable but has been loaded with firmware that creates the incompatibility. I.e, some irresponsible manufactureres may be victimizing their customers in aid of one standards group. They take the risk to get some cost subsidy I suppose.

I did check the iMac, and you can read it on their website specs: the new iMacs only support DVD+R. Not enough info on the Dell issue yet...

So... I switched to DVD+R for a distribution... playing into the hands of the bad guys I know but I need the disks to work. Everybody plays nice but a few, then the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Unless nobody buys squeaky wheels any more.... Hopefully iMac owners are complaining to Apple and they feel some pain from this ;-).
