burning module with different dvd project?

Post by jmike1945 »

VSP5 Ultimite: I opened a saved project and then went to share, and a different DVD menu showed up, one for another project! Any thoughts? I saved everywhere I can, after reading your suggestions
Like others, I struggle with having to re-create the DVD menu after editing the project. Most of your suggestions are helpful. But if I use Smart Package and open the VSP from another location, the Burn module opens in virgin fashion.
Thanks for any thoughts.

Hi Mike

There are three main options in burning a disc.
First of course complete the editing of your project and save the project as a VSP.

1 / with the project open in the timeline Share Create Video File, DVD will render the project to a compliant Mpeg2.
From a new project (nothing in the timeline) Share Create Disc—Add Video—add the mpeg created above, continue to create the menu and burn the disc.

2 / From a new project (nothing in the timeline) Share Create disc—Add Project Files—add your saved VSP file, continue to create the menu and burn the disc.

3 / with the project open in the timeline , Share Create Disc will show the project as a single thumbnail in the timeline, continue to create the menu and burn the disc.

In each case when you close the burner window you are taken back to the timeline, you must now save the project from File Save or Save As

What approach are you taking.?

I always work from a VSP before going to Share and then Burn.
Do you know if the Burn objects (menu pictures, chapter titles, animations etc.) are stored in the VSP that I always save after the burn module closes.. BTW as it closes, it goes thru a save form. Where are those objects being saved?

What happens if a VSP is renamed? Are there links inside to other files in the projects and specific locations?
Thanks
Mike
PS I am a programmer and remember when file paths were much more flexible (i.e. 40 years ago)
We have made some progress.!

I've read many times your correspondence with edrizz about having to redo menus.
Thank you for the time you put into this.

I just did an experiment. I used the File/Smart Package to copy a project to an external hard-drive (J:).
If I open the J:VSP, there are none of the menu objects saved with the local project (C: drive).
The J: VSP is only 24kb. The C: VSP is 1815 kb.

Another relevant question: If I open the burn module and make some changes that I do not want to save, how do you prevent them from being saved? There is no option to not save changes. Hopefully if I don't re-save the VSP before closing VSP5 the changes won't be saved. So there is somewhere a temp burn module vsp file that gets merged with the official project file at the end thru Save?

Thanks for reading the meanderings.

Hi
A few questions here, I will try to answer as best as I can.

When we run video studio we see the workstation, we are looking at a project, it is untitled as indicated top left.
We can save the project by File Save or Save As, this saves the project as a VSP (Video Studio Project), the file can only be opened / used within Video Studio.

When we add files to the timeline we are inserting a Thumbnail a Virtual clip linked to and representing the files on the hard drive. As we edit the files on the hard drive do not get altered, to create a new video file we use Share Create Video File, this will render the project to a new file.
If we re-named/move or delete the original files on the hard drive, the project will loose their location and request a Relink.

We should however be able to re-name the project file .VSP’s as that would not alter the content.

Share Create Disc
Here we are still working with the project, if there is content on the timelines this is opened in the burner module as a single thumbnail. Video Studio may create a temporary VSP saved to your Documents folders. Right click the clip and view its properties, the file name indicates the save location.

When we close the burner module your edit details are transferred back to the main timeline project, (that’s how I understand it)
Now we must save the project again to retain the menu structure.

I would advise that when burning a disc you do it from a new project, nothing in the timeline, give it a name ie Burn the Holiday Video --Share Create Disc—Then add your video or project file, My own preference is to create a video file then add that to the burner module.

Smart Package
Sorry but I cannot fully answer your question, although I do use the Smart Package options, but not when burning a disc.
I can confirm that on one occasion I tried the menu structure was lost and I had to re-do. So I guess similar to your findings. I did not pursue the incident.

Finally I have never closed the burner module with the intent of not wishing to save, I close when I know the details I have set are correct, When I return to burn the disc I always check my settings.

Hope this helps
