BIG problem
Brand new installation of VS vX6 pro.
When reviewing clips dragged to the Time Line Panel all works just as it should.
When reviewing the project, however, the time line moves just as it should with time but the Player Panel just updates every second so I get a series of stills instead of video. After rendering the final file behaves exactly the same.
Has anyone come across this and got a fix.
I am making the assumption that the media player used makes no difference. Being a hater of WMP I use VLC.

Re: BIG problem
Welcome to the forum... but ... ummm... we need more information. What is the format of the video? Where did it come from (if from a camcorder, brand and model)? Have you done any editing to it?
To get the format, please right click on one of the clips in either the timeline or library window, and copy ALL its Properties here, please, or post a screen grab. Then we will have a better idea of what we are dealing with...

Re: BIG problem
Camera is Toshiba Camileo A35 which uses SD cards. Data copied to HDD as avi files.
What is doesn't say is that is UK PAL
Makes no diff whether I edit it or not.

Re: BIG problem
Hi
The properties show as 29.97fps and that’s NTSC not Pal although that should not be a problem.
The compression is using Microsoft DVT-DVD Video Encoder, did the camera come with software, and if so have you installed it, this may install the correct codecs on your pc, that’s if this is the issue?
The video is HD and as such VS will create Proxy Files to assist in editing/playing the video, Smart Proxy may take a while to render, view the Smart Proxy Manager.
That however does not change the fact that the new rendered file shows the same problem, how are you playing the new video, try the VLC Media Player from VideoLan

Re: BIG problem
I have NOT loaded any camcorder software. The camcorder has never been connected to my computer, I transfer the files by putting the SD card in the computer.
I am already using VLC Media PLayer
In my simple view, the files are OK when viewed direct from the files on the computer (either in VLC or VS) and go wrong only when processed by VS. Therefore, it must be a VS problem. Or is this too simplistic?

Re: BIG problem
Hi David
“too simplistic” maybe
Video Studio does provide some encoders but cannot provide all for all video types, Mov files wont work unless you install QuickTime Player
De-coding the video to play is easy, VLC is probably the best in playing most formats, editing can be difficult, En-coding/editing can be difficult for some video types, and indeed demanding on the pc’s resources.
If your camera came with any software, a program that will help in transferring the files to the pc or a video editor, you may be best to install the software.
This may install additional Video codecs, it may not of course.
So do you have software that came with the camera?
Ok so you use VS to render/create a new video file, what options did you use, What did you create?

Re: BIG problem
According to the camcorder manual:
"Section 7
Viewing Pictures and Movies on PC
Installing Bundled Software
The CD-ROM supplied with this camcorder contains 3 pieces of software.
• ArcSoft MediaImpression is a user-friendly application that helps you managing your media,
burning your video into DVD, and uploading your videos to YouTube easily.
• ArcSoft MediaConverter is a powerful application that converts multiple video formats into
compatible format with your camcorder.
• Adobe Reader is a popular program that you need to have installed to read the User’s Manual.
Many computer users will find they already have this software installed on their computer.
To install the bundled software:
1. Insert the CD-ROM into your computer’s CD-ROM drive. The autorun screen appears.
2. Click “Install Application Software”. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Note
The detailed information can be found in online help of all the bundled software.
Transferring Pictures or Movies to a Computer
You can transfer pictures or movies stored on your camcorder to a computer and send them in e-mails
to friends or post them on the websites.
To do this you should:
1. Connect the computer and camcorder with the supplied mini USB 2.0 cable. The LED will light up
and blink.
2. After the LED stops blinking, movies and pictures can be found on your computer at
“My Computer\Removable Disk\DCIM\100MEDIA”.
3. Under this folder, you can view, delete, move, or copy any movie/picture you want.
4. Use the bundled ArcSoft application software to edit the movies or pictures."
There are no codecs on the CD and there are no driver files (or, indeed, any files at all) on the Toshiba site.
The software on the CD has nothing to do with downloading or playing the files from the camcorder.
I get the same problem whether I create a file or not.
And please do not suggest that I download and use the ArcSoft editing software, because (1) I don't like it and (2) I have paid good money to buy VS.

Re: BIG problem
Well, despite your unwillingness, it sounds to me that the ArcSoft Media Converter is precisely the program that is likely to install a variety of codecs onto your computer. And unless you have the one used by your camcorder on your PC, it is unlikely that any other editing program -- apart from the ArcSoft Media Impression one -- will be able to deal with the video.
It is rather unreasonable to expect that a program like VS will have *every* type of codec on it in order to be able to deal with every type of video. There are are over 800 formats of video which call themselves .avi, for instance... VS does not, for example, install the DivX codec, which is a very common format used by a lot of users, including users of VS. But it is simple to download the DivX codec from the DivX.com website, or as an alternative, download and install the XVid codec, which is the open source equivalent.

Re: BIG problem
Did the camcorder come from somewhere like USA?
I'm puzzled by the NTSC properties of the file.
You'd need to reinstall VS to set it to work in NTSC to get best results.
Or, have you installed VS as NTSC, in which case you'd need to reinstall and tell it you are in UK and to use PAL.

Ken:
Loaded ArcSoft Media Converter and it made no difference
Tried K-Lite codec pack as recommended by Corel - made matters worse each clip was totally static
I spoke to Toshiba who basically said "what's s codec?"
Is it so unreasonable to expect VS to deal with every type of codec? VLC almost does!
Skier-hughes
Bought camcoder in Argos in UK
I am also puzzled by the NTSC settings - the camcorder is set to PAL
I have put in a technical request to Corel. Will get a reply in about 2 weeks
Getting really fed up with the whole thing

Re: BIG problem
When you installed VS did you choose both UK as your location and PAL as your video type? It doesn't automatically do it for you and people often miss this little but very important nugget!!
You may need to reinstall it.
You don't have a link to an on-line manual for this do you? I can't find any info on Toshiba's site about the format it records in.

Re: BIG problem
Hi David
Can you make a sample available to download, maybe using one of the free sharing sites.
Some users have used 4Shared others Media Fire.
Then we can try the video on our pc, I would expect to have the same problems, but worth a go.
Installing Video Studio, as Graham says you have to select UK or Pal during the install.
However it should not create that much problems even if you have installed as Ntsc.
To check the installation go to Share Create Video File DVD, do the options show NTSC or Pal, they should show Pal.
The video files properties certainly show as NTSC using 29.97 fps, and that’s from the camera, if Pal it would be 25fps.

Re: BIG problem
I have a Toshiba Camelio S10 - and like dd-uk I am in the UK and my whole system is therefore PAL.
I do not normally use that camera for video as I prefer my Panasonic but I do carry it as I find it makes an excellent stills camera that slips into my shirt pocket - but I remembered that a couple of years ago I did experiment with taking videos although never did anything with them.
so I dug it out and copied a video file from the card to my hard disc - opened VS and put the video in the timeline - a quick check of properties told me the frame rate is 29.97 even though the TV standard set on the camera is PAL - like David my camera was purchased here in the UK
So I played my clip - and guess what - EXACTLY the same performance as David - the image jumps in about 1 second stills.
I checked my project settings and they were still PAL - so I changed them to NTSC and played the clip again - this time play back was smooth - almost perfect.
Next I rendered out a 25fps video - changed my project properties back to PAL and played the new clip - no problems plays well.
so to me David the answer to your problem is to change your project properties to NTSC - do all your editing - then render out a PAL video to burn to DVD.
