Can I rename the sound clips to something more sensible and explanatory without causing any problems?
thanks

Yes certainly - but depending on how you do it you may confuse yourself.
If you just change the names of the music clips in the folders on your HDD then next time you click on a thumbnail in the library you will receive a message that the clip does not exist and offering you the chance to relink - which is easy to do - you just browse to the file and click on it.
If you just want to change the name of the thumbnail in the library pane then just click once on the thumbnail and again on the text under it to put you into title edit mode - that will not throw up an error - but will also NOT change the name of the file on your HDD.
what I usually do is first delete the thumbnails in the library - then change the name of the file in the folder on your HDD - then re-import the file to the library pane which will then populate with the new name.
I very often do this with video files as well since they nearly all come off the camera with not very informative file names
