And if you are going to go to a card based system, make sure they pay out for a proper high definition camera, but then they may need to buy you a new computer to cope with those demands :)

Quite agree about the HD camera although most of the mid range cameras are HD by default. I was working with HD on my Canon HV20 back in 2005. It was the new editors such as VS X6 and Avid Pinnacle that created the demand the for extra power that new computers can give.
My Dad used to do the audio version of recording the Sunday service with cassettes sent to the infirm parishoners. I guess this is a similar use so it could be as simple as burning a DVD directly from the raw footage. In this case VideoStudio would be a luxury but handy if you have it.

One thing SheilaN - you said you did not use a plug in mic. How do you collect the sound clearly and without echo? I would have tried to mic up the relevant sound sources - choir, priest etc.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Before we started video taping church services, we did audio only and provided cassettes to sick and shut in members. Our church is a nice size, but it is not huge. We are not recording from a raised "platform." There is no balcony in our church. We actually place the camera behind the last pew on a tripod. It is in direct line of sight to the pastor and the choir is behind him. Surprisingly, there is no echo. The video/audio actually comes out ok, depending on who is operating the camera that day. :D

There is a local television station that has a channel that airs various church services and we have to edit the footage down to 59 minutes. We burn raw footage to dvd and make a dvd with some editing available for members who may want a copy of a particular service. Otherwise the raw footage and edited dvd become part of the church archives. This is what I use VSX5 for. I cut dead space and add titles.

I have scheduled to get the church camera tomorrow, so I will attempt to capture into VSX5 with the same tapes on the church camera and let you know the results.

Hi Sheila

Good luck with the Church camera, hopefully that will be successful.
In the past our son has recorded the church service to audio, similar reasons. Some video maybe at special services.
Our only involvement with church is creating and printing the quarterly newsletter, no video for that………….
That's the wife's job..........

All the best

Hi Trevor, Ken and everyone who has helped me with this.

I got the church camera. When I first connected it to the computer with firewire cord and went to capture tab, the "capture video button," after it read the camera, would not enable. I played the tape, and it played on the capture screen. Unfortunately, I had the same results with the choppy/static in the audio. VS actually froze up and would not respond. I had to use task manager to stop the program.

I disconnected the camera, restarted the program, and reconnected the camera. Then the tape captured fine, without any problems with the audio. I actually was able to capture three weeks worth of footage. (I had gotten behind with this problem) Towards the end of the second tape, (I captured/transferred 6 tapes) the audio did start to act up, slightly, but the remaining four worked fine.

Thank you all for helping me to resolve this issue. I am still suggesting updating our equipment to a camera with SD card. But at least I can now work with what I have.

We also have a website and a youtube account. We want to upload only certain sections of the service so they are available on the website. When I go to upload to youtube in VS, it says that it will be shortened to 15 minutes. We have extended the time on the youtube account to upload video longer than 15 minutes. Is there a way to tell VS this, so the video will not be shortened?

Thanks,
Sheila

It is possible on the first attempt that the firewire did not connect properly. There still seems to be a wear problem with the church camera and the tapes.
Pleased that you sorted the main problem and recovered the backlog but continued use of those tapes will make the problem worse. New tapes are necessary and a cleaning tape (if this has not already been done ) should be used.

I tried to transfer some audio tape to CD a while back. The tapes had been used once but had been sitting around for a year. Every tape had "print through" or was damaged so I could not recover any of the old recording. I have not been keen on tapes since then. All the tapes from my HV20 have been transferred to DVD as a backup.
Obviously the HV20 has a tape drive mechanism. It is built like a Swiss watch, beautiful to behold, but gave me concerns about its robustness. I am sure it is "tough as old rope" but if I'm wrong .............! The V700 just has bits of wire to connect the SD card, much simpler and less worrying.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Hi Sheila

You Tube duration limit, this has been removed for X6 but yes it is possible to override this using X5.
I noticed on the Corel Knowledge Base there was instructions as to how.
You will have to do a search, should I find the details I will post the link, found it........

How to adjust the 15-minute limit duration when uploading a video on YouTube in VideoStudio Pro X5?

What type of files are you using to upload to you tube?
I am assuming you are doing Share Upload to Web-You Tube?

You are converting from DV-AVI, is the quality ok when converted to Mpeg4?

You can always create your own Mpeg4 template using Settings – Make Movie Templates Manager, then there is no limit.
Upload to Web for me being Pal uses, you may see NTSC sizes.

MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 25 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Main Profile Video: 5000 Kbps
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps

The template will show when doing Share Create video File adjacent to the Custom option.

Hello everyone. I have not upload anything yet to youtube yet, but I am going through share upload to web youtube. When I click on the link provided, I get a page with a message from "force.com" that I am not an authorized user. There are no other links on the page. I did a google search, and came up with the same link, but it goes to the same page, with the same message.

Any suggestions on how I can view this?

Thanks,
Sheila

Hi

After completing the render, close the YouTube upload window.
Now logon to your YouTube account using your own web browser.

I assume you have created your own YouTube account

Hi Trevor,

Sorry, I didn't make it clear what I was asking. I was not able to view the link you provided on how to upload to you tube for longer than 15 minutes using VSX5. We do have our own youtube account. I have not tried to upload yet because I get the message that the footage will be shortened to 15 minutes.

Thanks,
Sheila

Hi Sheila

Apologies, yes there does seem to be an issue with the Corel Site, in particular the Knowledge Base, its is not available, I have forwarded this info on to Corel, hopefully they will fix the problem.

You may be best to use Settings- Make Movie Templates Manager to create your own template. If you are unsure of the properties to use when you Share Upload to Web – YouTube , the Create Video File window shows the properties in the lower panel, copy and paste these to a word Doc.
Close the window.
Go To Settings – Make Movie Templates Manager-New-File Format Mpeg4
Give the template a name “My YouTube Template”
Under the Compression tab choose Video Type as H264 Main
Then complete the General Tab, return to the Compression tab to set the Video Data Rate

The properties should be similar to these.

MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 29.97 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Main Profile Video: 5000 Kbps
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps

The template will be available from Share Create Video File, bottom of list

Hope this helps
