Checking for updates fails

Post by hdave »

Running v1.1.0.30 on Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 64bit. When checking for updates, all I get is a dialog that states:
Moved Permanently
The document has moved here.
This started happening with previous version as well. When I click on the link "here" I go to a web site with this URL:

Code: Select all

http://aftershotpro.com/www.corel.com/Corelinternational.html?function=updates&app=AfterShot&lang=EN&licenseid=540111115&productversion=1.1.0.30&language=0&isuser=0&OS=lin
Which throws an error in Chrome that says:

Code: Select all

This webpage has a redirect loop

Until now I was in the stage of being confortable with ASP, all my newest cameras (D800 and RX100) are supported, my workflow is stable and it just works for me. Having a little popup every time I open ASP is a little annoyance but could make me move elsewhere...

Hello,

Just a thought that went to my mind : according to the time they need to redirect a link to the correct pages, I understand it takes so long before they can provide us with a new release...

Hi Everyone,

My name is Rick Champagne and I am the Senior Product Manager for Corel’s Photo & Video products, which includes AfterShot Pro. I generally don't like to intrude in the User To User Forum, but I really wanted to touch base with you to give you an update on what is happening with the update link and AfterShotPro.com.

The server that hosted AfterShotPro.com was damaged and we’ve been working on restoring it ever since. A number of files were casualties of this, which is what has led to a much longer delay than we anticipated in getting it back online.

During the restoration of the server, the domain had to be redirected so that people visiting AfterShotPro.com would still have something to land on. The side effect of all of this was that the update link in the application broke, causing the update error message to appear every launch of AfterShot Pro. I sincerely apologize for this and I want to assure you that we are actively working on resolving the issue and will have the server back online soon.

I will provide another update once I have more information. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who helped with suggestions for turning off the preference for checking for updates at launch.

Best Regards,

Rick

Hi Rick!

Thanks for the update! So what you're saying is this: you didn't have a backup?

I understand that you dont like to intrude in the User To User Forum, but take a look at what's happening. Almost everybody is either leaving og has left already, because the general feeling is that AfterShot is dead or discontinued. There is no development of plugins any more (some have stopped working and have not been updated). The only thing people is talking about is what program to switch to, because there are no updates to AfterShot.

Maybe you should intrude just a little bit more ...

btw fyi: The page does not redirect, it just does this: "Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete."

Hi lundbech,

First, thank you for your kindness in your response. We do of course keep backups, however in this particular case, the corruption of some of the files started before the most recent changes to the server. In order to have the integrity of the server intact and up-to-date, we needed to start from scratch in some areas. All that being said, I don't want to lead us astray with my view of the file-level issues our IT team is dealing with, but I did want to share the information I had with you.

Regarding the redirect, it will work properly if you are visiting from a browser. You're correct though that the app is not redirecting properly and this is something that we hope to resolve once the server is restored.

As for the other broader concern that you raised, I really feel it warrants a separate thread that I will start soon. I've read the posts and even had several phone conversations with very helpful members of the community. The message is coming through very clearly. In fact, I would like to extend an open invitation to anyone else who would like to share their thoughts with me over the phone. Please feel free to PM me if you would like to set up a call.

Again, I'll post another response regarding AfterShotPro.com as soon as I have more progress to report on.

Best Regards,

Rick

Whow that's impressive !

It started on (maybe before) march 29 and today, April 16, that is more than 2 weeks later, "Rick Champagne, the Senior Product Manager for Corel’s Photo & Video products, which includes AfterShot Pro" comes to tell us it's a server problem which could not be solved since then although they're getting backups...
Are we talking about that Corel company that's worth a few hundreds of million USD or a fresh IT startup held by kids in a garage ?
Are you telling us that, as the Senior Product Manager for Corel’s Photo & Video products, you're not able to tell us when we, customers, shall recover access to these pages related to ASP, after more than 2 weeks off ?

BTW, Rick, could you please read again lundbech's explanation about the page redirection ?
How can you say that "Regarding the redirect, it will work properly if you are visiting from a browser" when you're told that "Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete."
Firefox is a browser ! Did you even try to connect to any sub-page under http://www.aftershot.com, for example this plugin page ?

Are you expecting to convince anyone with such explanations ?

Anyway, as written before it's no big deal, just a tick out in the preferences... What we all do really want to know now, dear "Senior Product Manager for Corel’s Photo & Video products, which includes AfterShot Pro", is what's actually going on with ASP and when will you publish a decent roadmap for a s/w we've mainly been using with satisfaction (far) before it was called ASP ?

This information would be really valuable for us all, your customers ! Thanks for reading.

(english is not my mother tongue, so apologies for the incorrect formulations)

Ok manu-p, I understand that you are not pleased by this all "Corel thing". Thanks for sharing it, since most of us aren't neither. But let's not blame Rick Champagne personally. He had the decency to talk to us personally. And it's a "premiere" in the ASP forum.

However, you have a good point: "what's actually going on with ASP and when will you publish a decent roadmap...".
Well, let's give a chance to Rick Champagne to answer this question ...

As you can see Mr Champagne, this "roadmap" is the main concern for your customers. So, can you please stay in touch with us? (through this forum. Not on facebook!)

Thank you in advance for your support.

I believe Rick is referring to the domain name (aftershotpro.com), and not the plugins page. To me it seems that there are two problems; the update checker is broken, and the plugins page is missing. It would be fantastic to have the plugins page back, since the plugins add a huge improvement to what can be done with AfterShot.

Also, updates with AfterShot need to be made much more frequently to add new cameras. There have been countless complaints from people who want to use AfterShot, but cannot because their cameras are not yet supported (even though they may have been available for quite some time). In my opinion AfterShot stands up very well to Lightroom (which I also own), and I prefer to use AfterShot unless I find myself in a position like some have..... having an unsupported camera.

Hi Christopher,

Thank you for the great summary and your observations about AfterShot Pro. Yes, our priorities for the server restoration are exactly that - fix the check for updates, and get the plugins back online. Camera updates are a separate issue and one that I will communicate about in another thread soon. Your point is well-taken though.

tundraquad... your welcoming nature is very much appreciated. The lines of communication are open now and I have more calls with community members tomorrow to keep the conversation going. The long term roadmap is actively being worked on right now and I will share what I can once I am able to. To your request, I'll post in this forum.

As for the update today, I had a meeting with IT earlier this afternoon and they have the server running in a closed environment. I ran some tests and my check for updates worked, but there were numerous formatting issues that needed to be resolved. Progress is progress though!

Best Regards,

Rick

Hi Rick!

I've been quite active on Corels facebook page, trying to get you to communicate something (anything!) about the future of AfterShot. So I'm quite pleased now to hear that something is going on, because there aren't really any alternatives to ASP for Linux. (at least not yet)

Being extremely busy with exams and such, I'll just leave it up to the pros to communicate with you.
