Considering a move to Unbutu Linux

Post by GeeBee »

Microsoft and I aren't really headed in the same direction any more, so I've loaded Unbutu as a dual boot and have started exploring Linux as a possible digital darkroom. (Lightroom was really the only thing keeping me on Win 7, anyway).

How is the Linux version of ASP? Has Corel kept it current with the Windows version? Are there differences in how ASP runs on various flavors of Linux?

I downloaded and tried the Windows version of ASP when it was first released, and while I thought it was a pretty good product, I decided to stay with Lr. However if I switch to Linux, clearly that decision needs to be reconsidered. How does Corel keep track of trials? Is there a Linux free trial version? And would I qualify to use the free trial again since I tried it once before?

After I posted this query, I saw a thread about ASP's Death. What's going on?

AS is usually faster on Linux than on Windows on the same hardware.

LR can be run on Linux with WINE (and a patch, see other thread).

Nobody knows what Corel is up to. Ever since they took over the only then we got was hot air.

cheers

Thanks, I don't think I'll risk spending any money on After Shot.

Depending on what you are looking for and the level of spending you are willing to do, you could have a look at RawTherapee http://rawtherapee.com or Darktable http://www.darktable.org/ or Photivo http://photivo.org all free alternatives to ASP and available for Linux. Also LightZone http://lightzoneproject.org/ may be available sometime soon.
