Library Thumbnails for My projects Have Disappeared

Post by JimDodds »

I'm going back to a project that has been dormant for almost a year.
My project files are fine, but when I load them there are no thumbnails any more,
just the default thumbnail library.

Are there library files associated with my project files I can search for and what kind of file is that?

Thanks again - this forum is really helpful! :-)

the file which holds the library is hidden with a lot of other information inside a .dat file within the programme folder - so is not available separately.

have you changed version or uninstalled and re-installed VideoStudio at all since you last opened the project - libraries do not migrate between versions but if you have upgraded you can go back to the previous version and export the library then import to the new version.

if your project opens OK then you can re-create the library by dragging the clips one at a time up into a new blank library - or open a blank library and use the import function and browse to you project files on your HDD and they will repopulate a library.

Hi

Just to add, when you open a project the timeline is populated with the clips used in that project.
They do not populate the library, clips in the library have to be manually inserted by the user, other than the Samples provided by the program

When I import a project file into the Library all I get is one thumbnail for the project file - it doesn't repopulate the library
Am I missing something?

Thank you, as always...

Hmm... yes, I did reinstall onto Win7 64bit... so that's how the library files were lost... I see

One more question...

When have the program running and open a series of projects a list builds up at the bottom of the File menu,
but it isn't there when I reopen the program -- can that be changed?

When you say you import a project file into a library - are you saying you import a .vsp file into the library.

a .vsp file is just a small text file which holds all the information about your project - what's in it and what editing you have done.

It is not a file which contains any images or videos from your project and will not re-populate your library.

...

we did have someone else with the problem that the recent project list under the file menu kept disappearing - it should not - If I remember correctly the problem was due to the use of a registry cleaning programme which regularly deleted the information from the registry - do you have a registry cleaning programme which you run regularly.

Hi Jim

There is a distinct difference between Import and Open.

To open a project you should select File-Open Project, browse for the VSP file.

Inserting a file, any file, the VSP file for instance will show as a single clip.
I would advise that you do not insert project files (VSP's) to the library or timelines.

There is another option to open recently used projects, select the File menu, to the bottom of the list is the last 4 used projects, selecting one will open the project to the timeline.

Jim said in his last post that that list keeps disappearing - will make it difficult to use.

Hi

Sorry I did not notice the reference to the 4 projects list at the bottom, I think we should discuss this further with Jim. The projects in this list should be retained, only replaced by newer projects, they should not simply disappear.
If you delete a VSP from the hard drive, the program will indicate this when you select it from the 4 list.

I have noticed with earlier versions of Video Studio that you may have to open the project a second time for the list of 4 to be populated, I think the latest version shows the project the first time it is saved. I think.

Whatever, adding a VSP to the library or timeline is a form of nesting and I would not recommend that, nesting can cause many problems and adding a VSP to the library could cause the program to freeze.

Some users do not know the difference between a Video File and a Project file, this indeed can cause problems, not that I am saying that Jim has that problem, but opening the project correctly is essential, and adding a VSP to the library is not the way to go.
