Can no longer edit jpg images

Post by AdrianW »

For some reason I'm now getting this error: "Unable to open the file. Please verify that the file is valid.", when attempting to edit a jpg.

(no problem with png's though).

Any new jpgs I create outside PSP display like this in the manager (but a new png displays OK):

Image

Existing jpg thumbnails display OK (I expect the thumbnail images are cached somewhere), but if I try to edit any jpg, I get this:

Image

I've checked for PSP X5 updates, and I'm on the latest version:

Image

Note: I can view the images successfully with Windows photo viewer and I can edit them using Windows Paint, it's just PSP that's having issues.
EDIT: I'd restarted my PC to ensure I was still having the issue, and I still couldn't edit any jpgs. While I've been writing this post and taking screenshots with the snipping tool, suddenly the jpg thumbnails displayed correctly and now I can edit jpgs again... BUT...

EDIT 2: And now it's doing it again :(

At the time, both Edit mode and Adjust mode would display the same error when attempting to open a jpg.

But, (see first post), it's now working :?

Thanks for very quick the reply, though.

Create a new document in the program paint some stuff on it, then save it as a jpg and see if you can reload it.
As others have suggested one of the first things to do is to do a shift load so the program gets reset. (hold the Shift key down as you double click the program icon to start it.

I did try resetting, but that made no difference (except for the annoying side effect of losing the custom toolbar that I'd created, and yes I saved and restored my workspace, but custom toolbars don't seem to be included).

It's being flaky for some reason, some times it works and sometimes it doesn't. It seems like if I have the Windows Snipping Tool open beforehand then it's OK.

This message comes up when you have opened a file in one program, and try to open the same file in PSPX5 at the same time.
I got 2 customers with same problem shortly after Windows 8 was published. Both had installed a backup program. This program permanently scanned the system and took over all JPGs. After removing that backup program (wasn't made for Windows8)/changing settings, PSPX5 worked again.

I don't have a backup program installed.

I did install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro edition recently - I wonder if that's the culprit? (Google doesn't turn up anything though).

It is what ever scans the system permanently. If your anti-malware program scans all the time, then turn it off and see how it works.

I closed down Malwarebytes, I also disabled Windows defender, restarted PSP, and it still fails to open jpg's. Meanwhile opening and editing the same images in Windows Paint works fine - this has to be an issue with PSP X5.

I did some more teting - this is interesting:

Image fails to open from PSP Manage view.
Image fails to open by right-clicking in Windows Explorer and choosing "Open with Corel PaintShop Pro X5"
Image DOES open by right-clicking in Windows Photo Viewer and choosing "Open With > Corel PaintShop Pro X5"

I repeated the test multiple times with different images with the same results each time.

I decided to totally uninstall and reinstall PSP X5, with the same results - jpgs won't open.

I then decided to create a new image in PSP and save it as a jpg, but and this was a surprise, jpg isn't even listed as a file type option:

Image

Anyone know what's going on there?

-edit-
I have a feeling it may be something to do with Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable - I had PSP throw a bunch of errors relating to that, just now. For some reason I have about five versions of that installed, along with six 2008 versions and a couple of 2010. Maybe PSP is calling the wrong one.
-edit again-
I reinstalled again. And now I don't have any issues if I run PSP as administrator, if I run it normally I get the same problem. (At least all the file types are back in the list).

You're missing about half of the file types that should be listed. I see that TIF is also missing from your list.
Using Paint Shop Pro versions 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 16

You need to be an administrator to run PSP. If you are limited user, you are also limited to system files.

Please don't remove PSP. This problem has nothing to do with PSP. It's your system. If it works as administrator, then contact Microsoft and ask them how to get an user profile with full rights to work in PSP.

???
1. I'm running PSP under a standard user account without problems (Win7).
2. What the heck is that about "system files"?
3. No program, except for specific system maintenance utilities, should ever require administrator privileges to run. This is for security reasons.

I'm willing to accept the fact that the OP's standard user account might be corrupted, but the solution would be to create a new standard user account, not to run PSP with enhanced system privileges.

Yes, I think it can be eeeeeasily done...

My account (the only account on the PC) is an admin account, what I meant by "run PSP as administrator" was right-clicking the icon and selecting "Run as admin...". But, as photodrawken says, there's no reason image editing software should need admin rights anyway.

I tried using system restore to roll back a couple of days, but that didn't help - tonight I'll try rolling back further.

Maybe there is something wrong with my account, but the only program I have any issues with is PSP.

AdrianW,
Right up front, I'll admit I have absolutely no experience with Windows8. However, for what it's worth, back when I was running Vista there was only one program that gave me problems. Creating a new administrator user account was the solution.

The other thought I have are the permissions on the JPG's folder. Have you tried creating a new, standard directory on your drive and attempting your JPG manipulations there?
