VS X6 Ultimate Trial

Post by george7054 »

Wanted to evaluate the stabilization in VS X6 Ultimate, but trial download only downloaded the Pro version.

Had bought a copy of vReveal, not impressed after considerable evaluation. Went to ProDAD and downloaded and trialled their minimum product, and was NOT happy with the saved results

While fairly impressed with the evaluation so far of VSX6 Pro, really need to evaluate the stabilization as implemented in Corel VS Ultimate.

Can I get a trial key that will unlock that functionality or get a trial download of the ultimate version rather than just the Pro version

In a word - no

The bonus articles are not included in the only download of the programme -they have to be downloaded separately after you have paid.

For the time being then, if I can't try, I don't buy!

Got caught that way with vReveal, once bitten, twice shy.

This is being a bit negative. The free download gives you the main program which is usable for 30 days and should tell you if the software will do what you want. Buy it and you get the "sweeties" thrown in.
In practice most of the "extras" are programs in their own right and can be evaluated separately.

You mentioned "stabilisation". Are you referring to the stability of the software or the ability to stabilise a shakey video shot? proDAD Mercalli SE is available in Ultimate but not in Pro but again I suspect you could test its worth outside VideoStudio.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

I do mean stabilization of shakey video, and I did go to proDAD website and ran my test video through their product. It took a very long time and the saved file played in an unsteady manner, i.e. it would speed up, slow down, and freeze for a nano second every now and again. I had never seen behaviour like this before. I do not consider this a 'Sweetie' for my purposes and we are looking for a complete solution.

Apart from this, I was reasonably impressed with Corel VideoStudio. It and the Media Player Classic packaged with K-Lite Codec Pack, are the only two so far that have had no problem with my TS streams from PVR recording, which I thought pretty good. Also VS seemed easy to use with a good UI.

I only had two problems with it.

First, initially it would not start, failing with a hard to trap message about conflicting and duplicate DLL's, and from the research on this, it seems the VS6 build has linked an old version of OMP whereas I had vReveal also installed which has linked the newer version, so there was an attempt by VS to initialize the library linguide40.dll when libcomp5m.dll was already initialized. By setting the environment variable KMP_DUPLICATE_LIB_OK=TRUE, it worked fine, also uninstalling vReveal without the environment variable worked fine, but this is a potential conflict VS might end up with against other softwares.

Secondly, the encoder options for generating h264 output were too limited, and I still had to take my resultant movie, and pass it through Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate to get the resolution and quality cut down I wanted (Agast!!, someone actually wanting less quality??).

But I'm still not buying the ultimate version without personally trialling the stabilization feature embedded in it, sweets can be bad for you!

I can certainly sympathize with your desire to try before you buy, though unfortunately no one here can help with that since we are all just users like you and not Corel employees. FWIW, when I first installed the retail version of X6 Ultimate package, I was disturbed that the various proDAD options did not appear, and I was most disturbed about that because of the Mercalli filter which I had been using very successfully in X5. (There is a separate thread here about that, but in the end I got them all working.)

Again FWIW, while most of my high def video is HDV I recently acquired a GoPro Hero 3, which is an amazing little camcorder, but whose main failing is the very thing which makes it so great. It's a high action camera which can be attached to just about anything. But the results can often be very bumpy since it has no inbuilt stability control (unlike my Canon HDV camcorder). So I have been using Mercalli on the Hero video with what I can only call amazing results. I know this is of no real help to you, but I thought I would at least say there is one user -- me!! -- who is more than pleased with the work of Mercalli in particular...
