Hi there,
I am attempting to author a dvd which contains 6 avi files. The avi files are around 300mb in size however as soon as I add it to my DVD the reported DVD size changes from 24mb (this is menus etc) to 1.2 Gb.
I don't understand how a 30Mb can suddenly triple in size.
This problem occurs with all of the files.
I am using
DVD Workshop 2
Windows XP Home Edition sp1
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Incorrectly reported avi file size
I've seen that happen when the .avi happened to be DivX or xVid. But it could happen with any .avi file that is heavily compressed (or using a very low bitrate).
For example, say your .avi file has a bitrate of 1,000kbps, and your DVD project encoding settings is using 6,000kbps -- you would expect your encoded file to grow by about 6x (this is just a simple example, and that doesn't even cover the audio bitrates).

Why is it a problem? It seems to be perfectly normal when you encode a low bitrate file to a higher bitrate file.

Do you want your DVD to play like a regular DVD? Or do you want to just burn the 6 .avi's onto the DVD Disc (like a data dvd)
Some DVD Players will play DivX videos (not alot of them). Is that what you are trying to do? What are your .avi videos? DivX, xVid, other
What bitrate do your source videos have, and what bitrate are you using in your project
You can try lowering your project's bitrate (staying within dvd spec)
Or are you trying to create a DVD with menus and buttons to play specific videos? If so, then your 6 .avi's will have to be encoded to compliant DVD format (mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 for video, and the audio will also have to be formatted properly).
There are guidelines for encoding for DVD -- check here for bitrates and resultions...

p.s. do you understand what is happening
and do you see why DVD WS is NOT INCORRECTLY reporting the size
It's just reporting the size based on your source video lengths, and the project settings it will use to encode your videos.

George W,
Thanks for the thorough response. I am trying to create a standard DVD. I kind of understand what is going on although this kind of thing is a little like the dark arts to me (!!).
I will read the article you have linked to and attempt to resolve the problem, if I get no joy I will post an update.
Thanks again
